Irregular menstruation after taking emergency contraceptive pills?
Hello Doctor, I had unprotected sexual intercourse with my girlfriend on December 3, 2016 (without ejaculation).
At that time, it was the last day of her menstrual period, but I was still concerned, so I had her take emergency contraception (within 12 hours).
Then, on December 8, she experienced bleeding (was it her period?).
She left on December 13, and since then, she has not had her period.
We have had multiple sexual encounters in between, but we always used condoms, and after intercourse, we checked the condoms for any issues, and there were none.
I have heard that menstrual cycles can be irregular, but is this normal? I have also heard of cases where menstruation can be delayed for two months.
I would like to ask the doctor if I should be worried about the possibility of pregnancy and the irregularity of her menstrual cycle.

If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding irregular periods after the use of emergency contraception, it's important to consider several factors that can influence menstrual cycles. Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), such as Plan B or Ella, are designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, but they can also cause temporary changes in the menstrual cycle.
In your case, your girlfriend took the emergency contraceptive pill shortly after unprotected intercourse on December 3rd. The bleeding she experienced on December 8th could be a side effect of the ECP, often referred to as withdrawal bleeding, which is not the same as a regular menstrual period. This bleeding can occur as the body responds to the hormonal changes induced by the emergency contraceptive.
It's not uncommon for women to experience irregularities in their menstrual cycles after taking ECPs. The hormones in these pills can disrupt the normal hormonal balance, leading to changes in the timing and flow of subsequent periods. Some women may experience their next period earlier or later than expected, and the flow may be lighter or heavier than usual. In some cases, it can take a few cycles for the menstrual cycle to return to its regular rhythm.
Given that your girlfriend has not had her period since the bleeding on December 8th, it is understandable to be concerned. However, since you mentioned that you have been using condoms consistently and checking for any issues, the likelihood of pregnancy is reduced. Condoms are an effective form of contraception when used correctly, and checking for any damage after intercourse is a good practice.
If your girlfriend's period does not return within a few weeks, it would be advisable for her to take a pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken at least a week after a missed period. If the test is negative and her period still does not arrive, it may be a good idea for her to consult with a healthcare provider. They can assess her situation, discuss her menstrual history, and determine if further evaluation is needed.
In summary, irregular periods after taking emergency contraception are relatively common and can be attributed to the hormonal changes caused by the medication. While it is important to monitor for signs of pregnancy, the use of condoms significantly reduces that risk. If there are ongoing concerns about her menstrual cycle or potential pregnancy, seeking medical advice is the best course of action.
