Post-tonsillectomy suture removal consultation?
It has been six weeks since the tonsillectomy, and when I open my throat, I can still see the white sutures (a total of four).
The sutures have not fallen out after more than a month.
Do I need to return to the hospital for the doctor to remove the sutures? If I do not have them removed, how long will it take for the sutures to fall out on their own?
Simon, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/01/29
Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology
In this situation, the suture may not fall out on its own.
It is recommended to return for removal to avoid discomfort caused by friction.
Happy New Year!

After a tonsillectomy, it is common for patients to have concerns about the stitches used during the procedure. Typically, the stitches used in tonsillectomy can be either absorbable or non-absorbable. Absorbable stitches are designed to dissolve on their own over time, while non-absorbable stitches need to be removed by a healthcare professional.
In your case, since it has been six weeks since your surgery and you are still seeing white sutures in your throat, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. While some absorbable stitches can take several weeks to dissolve, they usually do not last beyond six weeks. If the stitches are non-absorbable, they will need to be removed by a doctor.
Here are some key points to consider regarding post-tonsillectomy care and what to expect:
1. Healing Process: After a tonsillectomy, the healing process can take several weeks. During this time, it is normal to experience some discomfort, sore throat, and changes in swallowing. The presence of white tissue or stitches in the throat can be part of the healing process, but if they persist beyond the expected timeframe, it may indicate a need for further evaluation.
2. Signs of Complications: If you experience increased pain, difficulty swallowing, fever, or any signs of infection (such as pus or foul-smelling breath), it is important to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of complications that may require intervention.
3. When to Remove Stitches: If you have non-absorbable stitches, they typically should be removed within 7 to 10 days post-surgery. If they remain beyond this period, it is best to have them evaluated by your surgeon. In some cases, if the stitches are causing irritation or discomfort, they may need to be removed sooner.
4. Self-Care at Home: In the meantime, continue to manage your pain with over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended by your doctor. Staying hydrated and consuming soft foods can also help ease discomfort during the healing process.
5. Follow-Up Appointments: It is important to attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your surgeon or ENT specialist. They can assess your healing progress and determine whether any further action is needed regarding the stitches.
In summary, while some stitches may take longer to dissolve, the persistence of visible stitches six weeks post-surgery warrants a follow-up with your healthcare provider. They can provide a thorough examination and determine the best course of action, ensuring that your recovery continues smoothly. If you have any concerns or questions about your healing process, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare team for guidance.
