Can I take Linico while on birth control pills?

I am currently taking Linico for my condition, three times a week.
My doctor mentioned that my HDL-C is relatively low (42.9) and my LDL-C is high (113.3), while my cardiovascular risk factor is slightly elevated at 4.29.
Recently, my menstrual cycle has been irregular, so I purchased "Esdian" oral contraceptives to help regulate it.
I do not intend to use them long-term, possibly just for two to three months.
However, I noticed that the packaging indicates they are not suitable for individuals with cardiovascular issues.
Given my situation, can I safely take these contraceptives? Thank you.

Anita, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/02/04

Dr. Liao Huiling reply Pharmacology

Since I am not aware of the ingredients in the Linico supplement you are taking or if it is just a health product, I cannot address your question.
If you are concerned about potential risks, it is advisable to consult a physician for diagnosis and evaluation before using the medication.

When considering the use of birth control pills while on Linico medication, it is essential to understand both the implications of the medication and the potential risks associated with hormonal contraceptives, especially in the context of your cardiovascular health.

Linico, which is often prescribed for conditions related to cholesterol management, can have implications for your lipid profile. You mentioned that your HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) is relatively low and your LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) is elevated. These factors, combined with your reported cardiovascular risk factor of 4.29, indicate that you may be at an increased risk for cardiovascular events.
The birth control pill you are considering, Esdian, contains hormones that can affect your cardiovascular system. Hormonal contraceptives, particularly those containing estrogen, have been associated with an increased risk of thromboembolic events, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, especially in women who have other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Given your current lipid levels and cardiovascular risk, this is a significant consideration.

Before making a decision, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider. They can evaluate your overall health, including your cardiovascular risk factors, and determine whether the benefits of using birth control pills outweigh the potential risks in your specific case. They may also consider alternative methods for regulating your menstrual cycle that do not carry the same cardiovascular risks, such as progestin-only pills or non-hormonal options.

In addition, if you decide to proceed with hormonal birth control, your healthcare provider may recommend regular monitoring of your blood pressure and lipid levels to ensure that your cardiovascular health remains stable. It is also essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking, which can further mitigate your cardiovascular risks.

In summary, while it may be possible to take birth control pills while on Linico, your specific health profile and risk factors must be carefully considered. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that you make informed decisions about your health and well-being.
