Blurred vision and inflammation in the right eye?
Hello, doctor.
I have ingrown eyelashes, which have caused scratches on my cornea, so I have a few questions to ask.
1.
Every time I wake up and look in the mirror, my right eye is red and has white discharge.
Is this condition related to iritis?
2.
When I close my eyes to sleep, I see many small light spots appearing and disappearing simultaneously, or I see halos that continuously enlarge and shrink.
Is this also a symptom of iritis?
3.
Can iritis cause blurred vision?

Dr. Cai Wenyuan reply Ophthalmology
Hello, the situation you described does not seem to be indicative of iritis.
To determine whether it is iritis, a medical examination is necessary.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Tsai Wen-Yuan, Director of the Ophthalmology Department, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Hello! Thank you for your questions regarding your eye condition. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing several symptoms that could be related to various ocular issues, including inflammation and possibly other underlying conditions. Let’s address your questions one by one.
1. Redness and White Discharge in the Right Eye: The redness and white discharge you observe upon waking could indicate several conditions, but it is not necessarily indicative of iritis (inflammation of the iris). Common causes of redness and discharge include conjunctivitis (pink eye), blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid), or even a foreign body sensation due to your ingrown eyelashes. Iritis typically presents with pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision, and it may not always cause discharge. It’s essential to have a thorough examination by an eye care professional to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
2. Seeing Small Light Spots and Light Rings: The phenomenon of seeing small light spots or rings that expand and contract could be related to several factors. This could be a visual aura, which is often associated with migraines, or it could be related to changes in the vitreous humor (the gel-like substance inside the eye) or even retinal issues. While these symptoms are not typical of iritis, they warrant further investigation. If these visual disturbances are persistent or worsening, it is crucial to consult an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive evaluation.
3. Blurry Vision and Iritis: Iritis can indeed cause blurry vision, especially if there is significant inflammation affecting the iris or if there is associated swelling in the surrounding tissues. However, blurry vision can also result from other conditions such as refractive errors, cataracts, or retinal issues. Given your history of eye irritation and the presence of ingrown eyelashes, it’s possible that your blurry vision could be related to surface irritation or inflammation rather than iritis alone.
In summary, while some of your symptoms could be related to iritis, they could also be indicative of other ocular conditions. It is essential to seek a comprehensive eye examination to rule out any serious issues, especially since you have a history of eye irritation and discomfort. An eye care professional can perform tests such as a slit-lamp examination, check your intraocular pressure, and assess the health of your retina and optic nerve to provide a more accurate diagnosis.
In the meantime, if you are experiencing significant discomfort, over-the-counter artificial tears may help alleviate dryness and irritation. However, avoid self-diagnosing or treating without professional guidance, as this could potentially worsen your condition. If you notice any sudden changes in your vision, increased pain, or other concerning symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
I hope this information helps clarify your concerns, and I encourage you to follow up with an eye care specialist for a thorough evaluation. Your eye health is crucial, and timely intervention can prevent complications.
