Previously, there were no issues, but suddenly my throat feels very tight and slightly painful?
I was recently diagnosed with a hyoid bone cyst.
Initially, I only experienced mild discomfort when swallowing saliva.
However, over the past two days, I've suddenly started to feel pain when swallowing both saliva and food, and it feels like there is a noticeable foreign body sensation stuck in my throat.
I'm not sure if this is related to the cyst or if there might be another reason.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, it may be related to cysts, post-nasal drip, or gastroesophageal reflux causing chronic pharyngitis.
It is recommended that if symptoms persist without improvement, you should seek further medical evaluation.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
When experiencing sudden throat discomfort, especially after being diagnosed with a hyoid cyst, it is essential to consider several factors that could contribute to this sensation. The hyoid cyst, which is a fluid-filled sac located near the hyoid bone in the neck, can sometimes cause discomfort or swallowing difficulties, particularly if it has increased in size or if there is inflammation in the surrounding tissues.
Firstly, the sensation of pain when swallowing saliva or food could indeed be related to the hyoid cyst. If the cyst is pressing against adjacent structures in the throat, it may lead to discomfort or a feeling of fullness, which can mimic the sensation of having a foreign object lodged in the throat. Additionally, if the cyst has become infected or inflamed, this could also contribute to pain and discomfort during swallowing.
However, it is also crucial to consider other potential causes for your symptoms. For instance, conditions such as pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat), tonsillitis, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can lead to similar sensations of pain and discomfort when swallowing. Allergies or irritants in the environment may also cause throat discomfort, leading to a sensation of tightness or obstruction.
Given that your symptoms have changed recently, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to assess the size and characteristics of the hyoid cyst and to rule out any other underlying conditions. A thorough examination of your throat and neck may also be warranted to check for any signs of infection or other abnormalities.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to keep your throat moist and help ease swallowing discomfort.
2. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that may exacerbate throat discomfort.
3. Warm Salt Water Gargle: Gargling with warm salt water may help soothe throat irritation and reduce inflammation.
4. Soft Foods: If swallowing is painful, consider consuming soft foods that are easier to swallow, such as yogurt, applesauce, or smoothies.
5. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-prescription pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may help alleviate discomfort.
6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the severity of pain, any difficulty breathing, or changes in swallowing, and report these to your healthcare provider.
In summary, while your hyoid cyst may be contributing to your throat discomfort, it is essential to consider other potential causes as well. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with a clearer understanding of your symptoms and the appropriate steps to take for diagnosis and treatment.
