Genital issues

Happy New Year, Doctor! I would like to know if it's normal for the genital area to have a darker color even without any sexual experience.
Also, I previously had an issue with itching in that area, which led me to scratch it, and now it seems to have become wrinkled.
Will it recover? Or is it normal for the female genital area to have some wrinkles? Thank you, and I wish you good health!

anna, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/02/11

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Happy New Year! Your questions about vaginal color and texture are quite common among women, and it's important to address them with accurate information.

Firstly, it's completely normal for the color of the vulva, including the labia, to vary from person to person. Factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, and skin pigmentation can all influence the color of the vulva. Even without sexual experience, some women may notice that their labia are darker than the surrounding skin. This is generally not a cause for concern and is considered a normal variation. The darker pigmentation can be attributed to increased melanin production, which is influenced by hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy.

Regarding your concern about the texture of the vulva, it is also normal for the skin in this area to have some natural folds and wrinkles. The skin of the vulva is elastic and can change in appearance due to various factors, including age, hormonal fluctuations, and even skin conditions. If you've experienced itching and have scratched the area, it may lead to temporary changes in texture, such as increased wrinkling or irritation. The skin is quite resilient, and with proper care, it often can return to its normal state over time.

To promote healing and restore the skin's texture, consider the following tips:
1. Avoid Scratching: If you feel itchy, try to avoid scratching, as this can lead to further irritation or even skin damage. Instead, consider using a gentle moisturizer or a soothing cream specifically designed for sensitive skin.

2. Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry. Use mild, unscented soap and avoid harsh chemicals or fragrances that can irritate the skin. Cotton underwear is recommended as it allows for breathability and reduces moisture buildup.

3. Moisturize: If the skin feels dry or irritated, applying a gentle, hypoallergenic moisturizer can help. Look for products that are free from fragrances and dyes.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists or if you notice any unusual changes in color, texture, or discharge, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. They can assess for any underlying conditions, such as infections or skin disorders, and provide appropriate treatment.

5. Healthy Lifestyle: Staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and managing stress can also contribute to overall skin health.

In summary, variations in color and texture of the vulva are typically normal and can be influenced by a variety of factors. If you have concerns about changes in your body, especially if they are accompanied by discomfort or other symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a good step. Remember, your health and comfort are paramount, and there are professionals available to help you navigate these concerns. Wishing you good health and well-being!
