Brown discharge
Hello doctor, my last menstrual period started on January 5th.
I began having sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on January 16th.
Starting from January 29th, I noticed brown discharge that has continued until today.
During this time, we have also had sexual intercourse, and we have consistently used protection.
I took a pregnancy test on February 7th, which came back negative.
The brown discharge I’ve been experiencing lately seems to be slightly more than before, but it is still minimal.
It resembles menstrual flow but is not quite like it.
Occasionally, when I wipe with tissue, I notice a clear white fluid mixed with streaks of blood; sometimes it is brown, and other times it is bright red.
Since my first period, my menstrual cycle has not been regular; it sometimes occurs every two to three months.
I started taking traditional Chinese medicine to regulate my body around mid-January, and I am unsure if this is related to the changes I am experiencing.

Understanding brown discharge can be a source of concern for many women, particularly when it deviates from what is considered normal. Brown discharge often indicates old blood that is taking longer to exit the body, which can occur for various reasons. In your case, the timeline and symptoms you've described suggest several potential factors at play.
Firstly, it's important to note that brown discharge can occur at different times in the menstrual cycle. It may appear at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, or it can occur between periods, which is often referred to as spotting. The presence of brown discharge after sexual activity, especially when combined with other symptoms like changes in discharge color and consistency, can raise questions about hormonal balance, potential infections, or other underlying conditions.
Given your history of irregular menstrual cycles, where your periods have not been consistent since you first started menstruating, this irregularity could be a significant factor. Irregular cycles can be influenced by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, significant weight changes, and lifestyle factors such as lack of sleep or excessive exercise. The introduction of herbal medicine to regulate your body may also play a role in altering your hormonal levels, which can lead to changes in your menstrual cycle and discharge.
The fact that you have been engaging in sexual activity with your partner while using protection is reassuring in terms of pregnancy risk, especially since you have already taken a pregnancy test that returned negative. However, it is essential to consider that even with protection, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can still occur, which could lead to abnormal discharge. If you experience any additional symptoms such as itching, burning, or an unusual odor, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Moreover, the presence of white, transparent discharge mixed with blood or brown discharge can indicate ovulation or hormonal fluctuations. During ovulation, some women experience spotting due to the hormonal changes that occur as the body prepares for potential fertilization. This could explain the mixed nature of your discharge.
In summary, while brown discharge can be a normal occurrence, especially in the context of hormonal changes and irregular cycles, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the discharge persists, increases in volume, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a pelvic exam and possibly lab tests, to rule out any infections or other conditions that may require treatment.
In conclusion, the interplay of stress, lifestyle changes, and hormonal fluctuations likely contributes to your current symptoms. Maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider and keeping track of your menstrual cycle and any changes in your body will be beneficial in managing your reproductive health.
