Blood-stained discharge

Recently, I have noticed that my vaginal discharge has blood streaks and sometimes appears dark brown.
There is no abdominal pain.
Prior to this, the discharge was yellowish-green.
I had sexual intercourse on January 24, and my menstrual period started on February 4, which was normal.
The vaginal opening is obstructed by tissue, and this condition has persisted for three days.
I am unsure what could be causing the blood in my discharge.

SS, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/02/19

Understanding blood-streaked discharge can be concerning, and it's essential to approach this issue with a clear understanding of potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Blood-streaked discharge, particularly from the vagina, can arise from various factors, and it’s crucial to consider the context of your symptoms.

Firstly, the presence of blood in vaginal discharge can be attributed to several benign causes. One common reason is hormonal fluctuations, which can occur during the menstrual cycle. For instance, if you recently had your period (as you mentioned it started on February 4), it’s possible that the discharge could be related to the end of your menstrual cycle, where remnants of blood may mix with vaginal secretions. This is often referred to as "spotting" and can happen just before or after menstruation.

Another possibility is that the blood-streaked discharge could be linked to ovulation, which typically occurs about two weeks before your next period. Some women experience light spotting during ovulation due to the hormonal changes that occur at this time.
In your case, you mentioned having had sexual intercourse on January 24. If there was any trauma during intercourse, even minor, it could lead to slight bleeding. This is particularly relevant if there was any discomfort or if the vaginal tissues were sensitive or dry.
Infections are another potential cause of abnormal discharge. You noted that your discharge was previously greenish-yellow, which could indicate a bacterial or sexually transmitted infection (STI). Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis can lead to changes in discharge color and consistency, and they may also cause irritation or inflammation, potentially leading to bleeding.
The presence of black or brown discharge can also be concerning. This often indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the body, which can happen after menstruation. However, if this is accompanied by other symptoms such as a foul odor, itching, or discomfort, it may warrant further investigation.

Given that you have experienced this blood-streaked discharge for three days and that it follows a period of abnormal discharge, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam and laboratory tests, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In summary, while blood-streaked discharge can often be benign and related to hormonal changes or minor trauma, it can also indicate infections or other conditions that require medical attention. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical advice, especially if you experience any additional symptoms such as pain, a significant change in discharge color or odor, or if the bleeding persists. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
