Chronic pharyngitis
Two months ago, after catching a cold, my throat has not improved.
I have persistent phlegm every day, which is sometimes clear and sometimes yellow.
After clearing it, my throat feels very dry, and my saliva is thick.
I have seen a doctor and taken medication, but there has been no improvement.
Should I continue treatment for chronic pharyngitis or seek further examination?

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology
It is recommended to visit the otolaryngology clinic for an endoscopic examination.
Thank you!

Chronic pharyngitis can be a frustrating condition, especially when symptoms persist despite treatment. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing ongoing throat discomfort, excessive mucus production, and dryness for the past two months following a cold. These symptoms can be indicative of chronic pharyngitis, which is often characterized by inflammation of the pharynx that lasts for an extended period.
When considering whether to continue treatment or seek further testing, there are several factors to take into account:
1. Duration and Severity of Symptoms: Since your symptoms have persisted for two months without significant improvement, it may be time to reassess your treatment plan. Chronic pharyngitis can sometimes be caused by underlying conditions such as allergies, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or even environmental irritants. If your current treatment has not alleviated your symptoms, further investigation may be warranted.
2. Response to Treatment: You mentioned that you have seen a doctor and have been prescribed medication, but there has been no improvement. If you have been compliant with your treatment regimen and still experience symptoms, this is a strong indication that further evaluation is necessary. It may be beneficial to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist who can provide a more comprehensive assessment.
3. Associated Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may arise. If you experience difficulty swallowing, significant pain, fever, or any changes in your voice, these could be signs of a more serious condition that requires immediate attention.
4. Potential Underlying Causes: Chronic pharyngitis can be exacerbated by various factors, including allergies, smoking, or exposure to pollutants. If you suspect that any of these factors may be contributing to your symptoms, addressing them may help improve your condition.
5. Further Testing: If your symptoms continue despite treatment, your healthcare provider may recommend further testing. This could include allergy testing, imaging studies, or even a laryngoscopy to visualize the throat and assess for any abnormalities.
In conclusion, given the duration of your symptoms and the lack of improvement with treatment, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation. Continuing treatment without reassessment may not be beneficial if the underlying cause of your chronic pharyngitis is not addressed. An ENT specialist can provide a thorough examination and may suggest additional tests to determine the cause of your symptoms. They can also recommend a tailored treatment plan that may include medications, lifestyle changes, or other interventions to help alleviate your discomfort.
Remember, it’s important to advocate for your health and seek further evaluation when symptoms persist. Your well-being is paramount, and addressing chronic pharyngitis effectively can significantly improve your quality of life.
