Brown discharge
Hello doctor, my last menstrual period was from February 8 to 14, and I had sexual intercourse on the last day when there was still a bit of menstrual flow.
My periods usually come every 30 days.
On February 20, I suddenly noticed brown discharge.
What could be the reason for this? Is there a possibility of pregnancy? On February 19, I experienced abdominal pain while running at the gym, but I didn't stop exercising.
Could this be related?
Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/02/22
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, I apologize for not being able to provide a diagnosis based on your description.
It is possible that the abdominal pain is caused by ovulatory bleeding.
If you continue to experience discomfort, I recommend seeing a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Brown discharge can be a common concern for many women, especially when it appears outside of the expected menstrual cycle. In your case, the brown discharge occurring around February 20, shortly after your last menstrual period ended on February 14, can be attributed to several potential causes.
1. Implantation Bleeding: If you had unprotected sexual intercourse on the last day of your period, there is a possibility of pregnancy. If fertilization occurred, implantation bleeding can happen when the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, typically occurring around 6 to 12 days after conception. This type of bleeding is often light and can appear brown due to the older blood being expelled.
2. Hormonal Fluctuations: Your menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, and any fluctuations can lead to irregular bleeding or spotting. This can happen due to stress, changes in weight, exercise, or other lifestyle factors. The brown discharge could be a sign of hormonal changes rather than pregnancy.
3. Residual Menstrual Blood: Sometimes, the end of a menstrual period can leave behind old blood that takes longer to exit the body, resulting in brown discharge. This is generally not a cause for concern.
4. Ovulation Spotting: Depending on your cycle, some women experience spotting during ovulation, which can occur around the middle of the cycle. This can also present as brown discharge.
5. Infection or Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, or other gynecological issues can cause abnormal discharge. If the discharge has a foul odor, is accompanied by itching, or is associated with pelvic pain, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.
Regarding your experience at the gym on February 19, abdominal pain during exercise can be caused by various factors, including muscle strain, dehydration, or even gastrointestinal issues. If the pain was severe or persistent, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional, especially if it coincides with the appearance of the brown discharge.
Next Steps:
- If you suspect you might be pregnant, consider taking a home pregnancy test a few days after your missed period for more accurate results.
- Monitor your symptoms. If the brown discharge continues, changes in color or consistency, or if you experience significant pain, it is important to seek medical advice.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including proper hydration and nutrition, especially if you are engaging in physical activities.
In summary, while brown discharge can be concerning, it is often not a sign of a serious issue. However, understanding your body and any accompanying symptoms is crucial. If you have further concerns or if the discharge persists, consulting with a healthcare provider is always a good practice to ensure your reproductive health is monitored and managed appropriately.
