Throat issues
I have a question.
Recently, I noticed that there is a swelling next to my throat when I swallow, but I don't feel any obstruction when swallowing.
When I'm not swallowing, the surface appears normal.
I had an examination and blood tests done by an ENT specialist, and there were no signs of thyroid issues.
Which department should I consult for further examination?

Hello Ms.
Liang, based on your description, it is possible that you have a thyroid nodule, lymphadenopathy, or some congenital cysts.
Due to the limited information available, it is advisable to consult an otolaryngologist if symptoms persist, and to undergo examinations or receive medication as appropriate.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Chi Chao-Yun, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taichung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

When it comes to throat issues, particularly those that involve sensations of swelling or discomfort, it's important to understand when to seek the expertise of an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. Based on your description of experiencing a sensation of swelling near your throat while swallowing, but without any obstruction, it sounds like you may be dealing with a condition that warrants further evaluation.
Firstly, it's crucial to note that sensations of swelling in the throat can arise from various causes, including inflammation, allergies, infections, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Since you mentioned that your throat appears normal when not swallowing and that you have already undergone blood tests to rule out thyroid issues, the next step would be to consult with an ENT specialist. They are trained to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the throat, as well as the ears and nose.
In your case, the ENT specialist will likely perform a thorough examination of your throat, which may include a laryngoscopy. This procedure involves using a small camera to visualize the throat and larynx, allowing the doctor to identify any abnormalities such as swelling, lesions, or signs of infection. Additionally, they may inquire about your medical history, any recent illnesses, allergies, or exposure to irritants, and whether you have experienced other symptoms such as pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice.
If the ENT specialist finds no significant issues, they may consider other potential causes for your symptoms. For instance, if you have a history of allergies, they might recommend allergy testing to determine if an allergic reaction could be causing the swelling sensation. If GERD is suspected, they may suggest lifestyle modifications or medications to manage acid reflux, which can lead to throat irritation and swelling.
It's also worth mentioning that if you experience any worsening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, severe pain, or persistent swelling, you should seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires urgent care.
In summary, given your symptoms and the fact that initial tests have ruled out thyroid issues, it would be advisable to schedule an appointment with an ENT specialist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and determine the appropriate course of action based on their findings. Remember, early intervention is key in managing throat issues effectively, so don't hesitate to seek help.
