Medication consultation

Hello, I recently received the Gardasil 9 vaccine for cervical cancer and have been experiencing symptoms such as body aches and tremors.
A neurologist prescribed me a 21-day supply of Rivotril (clonazepam) 0.5 mg, but I plan to travel on the 14th day of the medication and will need to take Norina (norethisterone) tablets 5 mg prescribed by my gynecologist.
Can you please advise if there are any interactions between these two medications? Thank you.

RR, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/02/23

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology

Hello: The side effects of the Gardasil 9 vaccine include injection site reactions, fever, nausea, and headache, with rare occurrences of body aches and tremors.
There are no interactions between the Rivotril and Norina you are taking; however, Rivotril and alcohol both have central nervous system depressant effects, so please avoid drinking alcohol.
I apologize for the late response and wish you peace and happiness.

When considering the concurrent use of Rivotril (clonazepam) and Norina tablets (which contain dydrogesterone), it is essential to understand the pharmacological properties of both medications and their potential interactions.

Rivotril is a benzodiazepine that is primarily used for its anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties. It works by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, leading to a calming effect on the nervous system. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as anxiety disorders, seizures, and muscle spasms. The typical dosage can vary, but in your case, you are prescribed a low dose of 0.5 mg, which is generally considered safe for short-term use.

On the other hand, Norina tablets contain dydrogesterone, a synthetic form of progesterone. This medication is often prescribed for various gynecological issues, including menstrual irregularities and to support pregnancy in certain cases. Dydrogesterone works by mimicking the effects of natural progesterone, helping to regulate the menstrual cycle and maintain pregnancy.

Regarding the interaction between Rivotril and Norina, current medical literature suggests that there are no significant pharmacological interactions between these two medications. This means that taking them together is generally considered safe. However, it is crucial to monitor for any unusual symptoms or side effects when combining medications, as individual responses can vary.

It is also important to address your concerns about stopping Rivotril. While you mentioned that you feel Rivotril may not be improving your symptoms, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen. Abruptly stopping benzodiazepines, even at low doses, can lead to withdrawal symptoms, including increased anxiety, agitation, and, in some cases, seizures. If you believe that Rivotril is not effective, your doctor may suggest a gradual tapering of the dose rather than an abrupt cessation.

Additionally, since you mentioned experiencing body aches and tremors after receiving the HPV vaccine, it is worth noting that these symptoms can occur as part of the body's immune response to vaccination. While these symptoms are generally mild and temporary, if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while Rivotril and Norina tablets do not have known significant interactions, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns about medication use, especially when combining treatments. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure safe and effective treatment.
