Is armpit pain normal?
Recently, I've been experiencing intermittent sharp pain in my left armpit and chest.
A few days ago, I felt a brief pain in my heart when I turned too quickly, and my left arm feels a bit weak.
My left back is also quite sore, but I have a history of frequently straining my left arm.
Could this be related to a strain, or is it something else?

Pain in the armpit can actually be caused by many factors, including nerves, muscles, blood vessels, endocrine issues (such as menstruation), accessory breast tissue, and lymphatic involvement.
If the pain persists, it is advisable to consult a physician.

More Info
Armpit pain can be concerning, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, arm weakness, or back discomfort. Understanding the potential causes and symptoms associated with armpit pain is essential for determining whether it is normal or indicative of a more serious condition.
Common Causes of Armpit Pain
1. Muscle Strain: Given your history of frequently straining your left arm, it is possible that the pain in your armpit is related to muscle strain. Activities that involve heavy lifting, sudden movements, or repetitive motions can lead to muscle fatigue and strain, resulting in localized pain.
2. Nerve Compression: The brachial plexus, a network of nerves that innervates the arm, runs near the armpit. Compression or irritation of these nerves can lead to pain, tingling, or weakness in the arm. This can occur due to poor posture, repetitive movements, or even a herniated disc in the neck.
3. Lymph Node Issues: The armpit contains lymph nodes that can become swollen or tender due to infections, inflammation, or other medical conditions. If you have had any recent infections or illnesses, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Cardiac Issues: While less common, pain in the left side of the chest and armpit can sometimes be associated with heart problems, especially if accompanied by symptoms like shortness of breath, sweating, or radiating pain to the arm or jaw. Given that you mentioned experiencing heart pain, it is crucial to consider this possibility seriously.
5. Referred Pain: Pain in the armpit can also be referred from other areas, such as the shoulder, neck, or upper back. Conditions affecting these areas, such as rotator cuff injuries or cervical spine issues, can manifest as pain in the armpit.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given the symptoms you described, particularly the combination of armpit pain, chest pain, and arm weakness, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. While muscle strain is a common cause of armpit pain, the presence of chest pain raises the concern for potential cardiac issues. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include:
- Physical Examination: Assessing the range of motion, strength, and tenderness in the affected areas.
- Imaging Studies: X-rays or MRI scans may be necessary to evaluate for any structural issues in the shoulder, neck, or spine.
- Cardiac Evaluation: If there is suspicion of heart-related issues, an electrocardiogram (ECG) or stress test may be warranted.
Conclusion
In summary, while armpit pain can be caused by various factors, including muscle strain, nerve compression, lymph node issues, or even cardiac problems, it is essential to consider the context of your symptoms. Given your recent experiences with chest pain and arm weakness, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any serious conditions. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes and alleviate discomfort. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to health concerns.
