Back Pain: Pregnancy Signs and When to Test - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Lower back pain?

Last month, I accurately tracked my ovulation period and had an ultrasound that showed a follicle size of over 2 cm.
I also had intercourse with my husband and waited for half an hour before rinsing.
People say to take a pregnancy test on the 14th day, but I tested on the 13th day.
If the test was negative, does that mean I am not pregnant? My period is already 4 days late.
Should I continue to wait, or should I take medication to induce my period?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, a pregnancy test is usually accurate after 12 days post-conception.
If the chances of pregnancy are low and your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding back pain during early pregnancy and knowing when to take a pregnancy test, it's essential to consider several factors. First, let's address the timing of your pregnancy test. Generally, it is recommended to wait until at least the first day of your missed period to take a home pregnancy test for the most accurate results. This is because pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, which typically becomes detectable about a week after implantation, which usually occurs about 6-12 days after ovulation.

Since you mentioned that your period is already 4 days late, it would be advisable to take another pregnancy test. If you tested 13 days after ovulation and received a negative result, it could be due to testing too early. The sensitivity of the test can also vary, and some tests are more reliable than others. If you continue to get negative results but your period does not start, you may want to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Regarding back pain, it is not uncommon for women to experience various aches and pains during early pregnancy due to hormonal changes and the physical adjustments your body undergoes to accommodate a growing fetus. However, if the back pain is severe or accompanied by other symptoms such as heavy bleeding, cramping, or any unusual discharge, it is crucial to seek medical attention immediately. These could be signs of complications such as a miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, which requires prompt medical intervention.

In your case, since you have already missed your period and are experiencing back pain, it would be wise to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain worsens or if you experience any concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation and necessary tests, such as blood tests or ultrasounds, to determine the status of your pregnancy and address any potential issues.

If you are considering taking medication to induce your period, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider first. Self-medication can lead to complications, especially if you are pregnant or suspect you might be. A healthcare professional can guide you on the best course of action based on your individual health needs and circumstances.

In summary, take another pregnancy test if your period does not arrive soon. Monitor your back pain and any other symptoms closely, and do not hesitate to seek medical advice if you have concerns. Early intervention can be crucial in ensuring both your health and the health of a potential pregnancy.
