Lymph nodes on the right side of the neck?
Hello, doctor! I had a cold once, and the lymph node on the right side of my neck became red, swollen, and tender.
However, I didn't see a doctor immediately for the cold, and the lymph node fluctuated in size.
After about three days, since my cold symptoms hadn't improved, I went to see a doctor.
Since then, the lymph node on the right side of my neck has not been tender anymore, but it feels slightly larger and still fluctuates in size with my cold symptoms.
I would like to know if this could indicate a pathological change or if it is just fibrosis.
What impact does lymph node fibrosis have on the body? Is it dangerous if I leave it untreated? Thank you, doctor!

Hello, online user: Lymph nodes can fluctuate in size with colds, which is usually related to the physiological response caused by viral infections, so there is no need to worry too much.
Chronic inflammation of lymph nodes typically only leads to calcification without any long-term consequences.
However, if there is an increase in the number of lymph nodes or if other systemic symptoms develop (such as persistent recurrent fever, night sweats, or weight loss), it is advisable to follow up at an outpatient clinic.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the changes in your right neck lymph node. It sounds like you've been experiencing some fluctuations in the size and tenderness of your lymph nodes following a recent illness, which is quite common. Let’s break down your concerns and provide some clarity.
Firstly, lymph nodes are an integral part of the immune system, acting as filters for harmful substances and playing a crucial role in the body’s response to infection. When you experience an infection, such as a cold, it is normal for nearby lymph nodes to become swollen and tender as they work to filter out pathogens. This is known as lymphadenopathy. The fact that your lymph node was tender and swollen during your illness is a typical response, and the subsequent changes in size can also be expected as your body recovers.
You mentioned that the lymph node on the right side of your neck has become less tender but feels slightly larger. This could indicate that the lymph node is still reacting to the previous infection, even if the acute symptoms have resolved. It is not uncommon for lymph nodes to remain enlarged for some time after an infection, and they may fluctuate in size as the immune response continues to normalize.
Regarding your concern about whether this could indicate a pathological change or fibrosis, it’s important to note that lymph nodes can undergo fibrotic changes after prolonged stimulation due to chronic inflammation or infection. Fibrosis in lymph nodes typically occurs when there is a persistent immune response, leading to scarring of the tissue. While fibrosis itself is not inherently dangerous, it can indicate that the lymph node has been under prolonged stress, and it may not function as effectively as it should.
In terms of whether ignoring this condition poses any risks, it largely depends on the context. If the lymph node remains stable in size and does not develop new symptoms (such as pain, fever, or further enlargement), it is generally safe to monitor it. However, if you notice any significant changes, such as rapid enlargement, persistent pain, or the development of new symptoms, it would be prudent to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, the changes you are experiencing in your right neck lymph node are likely a normal response to your recent illness. While fibrosis can occur, it does not necessarily indicate a severe problem. Regular monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider are key. If you have any further concerns or if the lymph node changes significantly, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
Take care, and I hope you continue to feel better!
