Peeling skin
My boyfriend's genital area is peeling and sometimes it itches.
What could be the reason? I have some discharge (candidiasis), could this be the cause? Is there a possibility that we could transmit it to each other?

Dr. Liu Jianting reply Urology
Based on your description, it may be a fungal infection.
I recommend seeing a urologist for an examination, and it would also be advisable to consult a gynecologist.

More Info
Skin peeling and itching in the genital area can be concerning and may arise from various causes. In your boyfriend's case, the symptoms of peeling skin and itching could be attributed to several factors, including infections, skin conditions, or irritants.
One common cause of skin peeling and itching in the genital area is a fungal infection, such as candidiasis (commonly known as a yeast infection). This type of infection can occur in both males and females and is often characterized by itching, redness, and sometimes a white, cottage cheese-like discharge. If you have been diagnosed with a Candida infection, it is possible that your boyfriend could also be experiencing similar symptoms due to the same fungal organism. However, candidiasis is not typically classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but it can be exacerbated by sexual activity or shared environments.
Other potential causes of peeling and itching in the genital area include:
1. Contact Dermatitis: This can occur due to irritation from soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents. If your boyfriend has recently changed any personal care products, this could be a contributing factor.
2. Balanitis: This is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) and can be caused by infections, poor hygiene, or irritants. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and peeling skin.
3. Psoriasis or Eczema: These chronic skin conditions can also affect the genital area, leading to symptoms like itching and peeling skin. They are often associated with dry skin and may require specific treatments.
4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, such as herpes or genital warts, can cause skin changes in the genital area. If there is any suspicion of an STI, it is crucial for both partners to get tested.
Regarding your concern about transmission, while candidiasis is not classified as an STI, it is possible for the infection to be passed between partners, especially if one partner is symptomatic. It is advisable for both of you to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including swabs or cultures, to determine the exact cause of the symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.
In terms of treatment, antifungal creams or oral medications may be prescribed for fungal infections. For contact dermatitis, avoiding irritants and using topical corticosteroids may help alleviate symptoms. If an STI is diagnosed, appropriate treatment will be necessary for both partners to prevent reinfection.
To prevent future occurrences, consider the following:
- Maintain good hygiene, ensuring the genital area is clean and dry.
- Avoid using harsh soaps or scented products in the genital area.
- Wear breathable, cotton underwear to reduce moisture buildup.
- If either partner has recurrent infections, discuss preventive measures with a healthcare provider.
In conclusion, skin peeling and itching in the genital area can stem from various causes, and it is essential to identify the underlying issue to provide effective treatment. Both partners should be evaluated to ensure proper management and to prevent potential transmission of infections.
