There is a prickling sensation in the throat?

Hello doctor, recently I have been experiencing something strange with my throat.
Whenever I drink something, I feel a sharp sensation in my throat when swallowing, but I don't feel it when swallowing saliva.
It seems to occur only with larger amounts.
When I lie down with my head elevated, the sharp sensation is not present, but I still feel uncomfortable.
I thought it might be a fish bone stuck in my throat, and I've tried to cough it out, but it doesn't seem to work.
I would like to ask you, doctor, what could be the cause of my condition? Thank you.

Qianmin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/03/05

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: The most common causes may be related to pharyngitis or gastroesophageal reflux.
If symptoms persist without improvement, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngologist for further examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing a sharp sensation in your throat when swallowing liquids, which can be quite uncomfortable and concerning. There are several potential causes for this symptom, and understanding them can help you determine the best course of action.

One common cause of throat discomfort during swallowing is esophageal irritation or inflammation. This can occur due to various reasons, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation. This irritation can lead to a sensation of sharpness or discomfort when swallowing, particularly with larger volumes of liquid.

Another possibility is pharyngitis or tonsillitis, which is inflammation of the throat or tonsils. This condition can cause pain and discomfort, especially when swallowing. If you have had any recent upper respiratory infections, this could also be a contributing factor.

You mentioned that swallowing saliva does not cause discomfort, which might suggest that the sensation is related to the volume or temperature of the liquid being swallowed. For instance, very cold or hot liquids can sometimes cause a sharp sensation in a sensitive throat. Additionally, if you have any allergies or sinus issues, post-nasal drip can lead to throat irritation, which might also explain the discomfort when swallowing.

Another consideration is the possibility of muscle tension in the throat. Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tightness, which may create a sensation of discomfort when swallowing. This is often accompanied by other symptoms such as a lump sensation in the throat or difficulty swallowing.

If you suspect that you might have a foreign object, such as a fish bone, lodged in your throat, it is essential to seek medical attention. While you mentioned trying to cough it out, persistent discomfort could indicate that it is still present or that there is some other underlying issue.

In terms of management, here are some steps you can take:
1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, but try to avoid very hot or cold drinks if they exacerbate your symptoms.

2. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from spicy, acidic, or very dry foods that might irritate your throat further.

3. Gargle Salt Water: Gargling with warm salt water can help soothe throat irritation.

4. Over-the-Counter Remedies: Consider using throat lozenges or sprays that can provide temporary relief.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when the discomfort occurs and any other accompanying symptoms, such as fever, difficulty breathing, or persistent pain.

If the discomfort persists or worsens, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, order imaging studies or refer you to a specialist, such as an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor), for further evaluation.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for the sharp sensation in your throat when swallowing, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and provide you with relief. Thank you for sharing your concerns, and I hope you find this information helpful!
