The menstrual flow is scant and dark in color?
Hello, I have been dealing with uterine fibroids, which are approximately six centimeters in size, and I frequently experience infections in the vulva.
A doctor at the clinic informed me that I have a polyp in my vagina, which he removed, and I have undergone vaginal douching twice.
Recently, I have been taking traditional Chinese medicine, which has alleviated my discomfort from infections, so I stopped taking it.
However, my menstrual blood has been dark and scant, and my cycle is irregular, with a tendency to shorten.
Essentially, my periods are chaotic, starting at the beginning of the month and then returning at the end, with very little flow, requiring only panty liners.
I'm unsure if I need to go to a major hospital for further examination.
If so, what tests should I undergo? In addition to the dark and scant menstrual flow, I have experienced dizziness and significant hair loss, although I am still growing new hair.
I'm not sure if there is a connection.
Thank you.

More Info
Abnormal menstrual flow can be concerning, especially when there are underlying conditions such as uterine fibroids and vaginal polyps. Given your history of a 6 cm fibroid and recent issues with vaginal infections and polyps, it’s essential to understand the potential causes of your current symptoms and when to seek medical help.
Understanding Abnormal Menstrual Flow
Abnormal menstrual flow can manifest in various ways, including changes in the volume, color, and timing of your periods. In your case, you mentioned experiencing dark, scanty menstrual blood with irregular cycles. This can be attributed to several factors:
1. Uterine Fibroids: These benign tumors can affect menstrual flow by causing heavy bleeding or, conversely, lighter periods depending on their size and location. They can also lead to irregular cycles.
2. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or perimenopause can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and changes in flow. Hormonal fluctuations can cause the blood to appear darker due to slower shedding of the uterine lining.
3. Vaginal Polyps: The presence of polyps can also affect menstrual flow and may lead to irregular bleeding patterns. If you have had polyps removed, it’s possible that the healing process or any residual effects could influence your menstrual cycle.
4. Infections: Chronic infections can lead to inflammation and changes in menstrual patterns. While you mentioned that you have been feeling better after taking traditional Chinese medicine, the cessation of treatment could potentially lead to a resurgence of symptoms.
5. Other Factors: Stress, significant weight changes, and lifestyle factors can also impact menstrual cycles. The dizziness and hair loss you mentioned could be related to hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, or stress.
When to Seek Help
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider, especially since you have a history of uterine fibroids and recent issues with polyps and infections. Here are some specific reasons to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Changes: If your menstrual flow continues to be irregular, scanty, or dark, it’s important to have this evaluated.
- Associated Symptoms: The dizziness and hair loss you mentioned could indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. These symptoms can sometimes be linked to hormonal imbalances or nutritional deficiencies.
- History of Fibroids and Polyps: Given your medical history, it’s crucial to monitor any changes in your reproductive health closely.
Recommended Tests
When you visit a healthcare provider, they may recommend several tests to evaluate your condition further:
1. Pelvic Ultrasound: This imaging test can help assess the size and number of fibroids and check for any abnormalities in the uterus and ovaries.
2. Hormonal Testing: Blood tests to check hormone levels (such as estrogen, progesterone, and thyroid hormones) can help identify any imbalances.
3. Endometrial Biopsy: If there are concerns about the uterine lining, a biopsy may be performed to rule out any abnormal growths or cancer.
4. Complete Blood Count (CBC): This test can help assess for anemia, which may be a concern if you have heavy or irregular bleeding.
5. Thyroid Function Tests: Given the symptoms of dizziness and hair loss, checking thyroid function can be important.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms warrant further evaluation, especially considering your history of fibroids and polyps. It’s essential to communicate all your symptoms to your healthcare provider, including the changes in your menstrual cycle, dizziness, and hair loss. Early intervention can help manage any underlying conditions effectively and improve your overall health. Don’t hesitate to seek help from a gynecologist or a specialist who can provide a comprehensive assessment and appropriate management options.
