Sudden rapid and painful heartbeat?

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about my heart.
It often feels like it skips a beat suddenly, or it starts beating very fast.
When I place my hand on my heart, I can clearly feel that the rhythm is fast and irregular, and there is a painful sensation in my heart, making it feel like I can't get enough air.
Occasionally, I also experience a sudden sharp pain in my heart.
What could be wrong with my heart? I had similar sharp pains in my heart during middle school, but they were infrequent, so I didn't pay much attention to them.
However, since last year, the episodes of my heart racing have become more frequent, along with the sharp pain.
Recently, the duration of the fast and irregular heartbeat has increased; it used to last just a moment, but now it can persist for over 10 minutes.
So, I would like to ask the doctor why I am experiencing these symptoms?

Dr. He Dongjin reply Cardiology

Hello, it is likely that your cardiac discomfort is caused by mitral valve prolapse, possibly accompanied by some atrial or ventricular premature contractions.
However, this is just a hypothesis and cannot be confirmed without examination.
If you continue to feel unwell, it is advisable to visit a cardiology clinic for further evaluation.

More Info

Sudden heart palpitations and pain can be concerning symptoms, and it's important to understand the potential causes and implications of these experiences. Based on the information you've provided, it seems that you are experiencing episodes of rapid heartbeats (palpitations), irregular rhythms, and chest pain, which can understandably lead to anxiety about your heart health.

Possible Causes
1. Anxiety and Stress: One of the most common causes of palpitations, especially in younger individuals, is anxiety or stress. Emotional distress can trigger the body's "fight or flight" response, leading to an increase in heart rate and the sensation of palpitations. Given your mention of experiencing stress, this could be a significant factor.

2. Physical Activity: Engaging in physical activities, especially if you're not accustomed to them, can lead to palpitations. If you've recently increased your activity level or engaged in strenuous exercise, your heart may respond with increased rates and irregular rhythms.

3. Caffeine and Stimulants: Consumption of caffeine or other stimulants can also lead to palpitations. If you consume coffee, energy drinks, or other caffeinated products, consider reducing your intake to see if your symptoms improve.

4. Electrolyte Imbalance: An imbalance in electrolytes, such as potassium, magnesium, or calcium, can affect heart rhythm. This can occur due to dehydration, poor diet, or certain medical conditions.

5. Underlying Heart Conditions: While less common in younger individuals, certain heart conditions can cause palpitations and chest pain. Conditions such as mitral valve prolapse, arrhythmias, or even previous heart issues could be contributing factors.

6. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Sometimes, what feels like heart pain can actually be related to digestive issues. GERD can cause chest discomfort that mimics heart pain, especially after eating.

Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the frequency and duration of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider, particularly a cardiologist. They may recommend tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, or Holter monitor to assess your heart's rhythm and function.

2. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider making lifestyle changes that can help reduce stress and improve your overall heart health. This includes regular exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, adequate hydration, and sufficient sleep. Mindfulness practices, such as yoga or meditation, can also be beneficial for managing anxiety.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any associated activities or stressors. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

4. Avoid Stimulants: If you suspect that caffeine or other stimulants may be contributing to your symptoms, try to limit or eliminate them from your diet.

5. Stay Informed: Educate yourself about your symptoms and potential causes. Understanding your body can help reduce anxiety and empower you to make informed decisions about your health.

Conclusion
While experiencing palpitations and chest pain can be alarming, many cases are benign and related to anxiety, lifestyle factors, or temporary conditions. However, because your symptoms have increased in frequency and duration, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious underlying conditions. Taking proactive steps towards managing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also significantly improve your overall well-being.
