Medication-induced abortion blood volume?

Hello, Doctor.
I would like to ask a question.
On March 8th, I took a medication in front of the doctor, and the doctor instructed me to take the medication again at 3, 4, and 5 PM the next day (March 9th).
Shortly after taking the medication, I started to experience bleeding and passed some blood clots (not too much, but not too little either).
However, by March 9th, the bleeding had decreased significantly, and I was able to use just one pad for the entire day.
Does this mean that I have cleared everything out? I am a bit worried.
Thank you, Doctor.

When it comes to medication-induced abortion and the accompanying bleeding, it's essential to understand what is considered normal and what may warrant further medical attention. Based on your description, it seems that you have followed the prescribed medication regimen and are experiencing bleeding along with some blood clots.
Firstly, it’s important to note that bleeding after taking abortion medication, such as mifepristone and misoprostol, is a common and expected outcome. The process typically involves a few stages: initial bleeding may start within hours of taking the medication, and it can vary in intensity. Many women experience heavy bleeding initially, which may taper off over the following days. The presence of blood clots, especially small ones, can also be normal as the uterus expels its contents.

In your case, since you mentioned that the bleeding has decreased significantly by the next day and that one pad is sufficient for the entire day, this could indicate that your body is responding well to the medication. However, it’s crucial to monitor the bleeding closely. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately:
1. Heavy Bleeding: Soaking through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours.

2. Severe Pain: While some cramping is normal, severe pain that is not manageable with over-the-counter pain relief may indicate complications.

3. Fever: A temperature above 100.4°F (38°C) could suggest an infection.

4. Foul Smelling Discharge: This could also indicate an infection.

Regarding your concern about whether you have "cleared out" completely, it’s important to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend an ultrasound to ensure that the uterus is empty and that there are no retained products of conception, which can lead to complications if left untreated.

In summary, while your current experience of bleeding and clotting seems to align with what is typically expected after taking abortion medication, it is always best to err on the side of caution. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial to ensure that everything is progressing as it should and to address any concerns you may have. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount during this time.
