Abdominal pain can be alleviated by lying flat?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my intermittent abdominal pain.
Sometimes it occurs frequently (for several consecutive nights), but it has been half a year since the last episode.
Recently, I have been experiencing pain again.
The symptoms include abdominal pain (unable to distinguish between upper and lower sides) and abdominal bloating.
At times, the pain is so severe that I have to bend over while walking, but lying flat helps alleviate the pain.
The abdominal pain usually occurs at night, and after lying down to sleep, I feel better the next day.
It might be stress-related, but my stress levels are manageable now.
Should I see a doctor?

Abdominal pain can be a complex issue, and your symptoms suggest a few possible underlying causes. Given that you experience intermittent abdominal pain that often occurs at night and is relieved by lying flat, it may be beneficial to explore the potential reasons for this discomfort and the implications of your symptoms.

Firstly, the fact that your abdominal pain is often accompanied by bloating and is severe enough to cause you to bend over while walking indicates that it could be related to gastrointestinal issues. Common causes of such symptoms include functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can lead to cramping, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate these conditions, even if you feel your stress levels are currently manageable. The gut-brain connection is well-documented, and emotional stress can lead to physical symptoms in the digestive tract.

Another possibility is that your symptoms could be related to dietary factors. Certain foods can trigger abdominal pain and bloating, especially if you have food intolerances or sensitivities. Common culprits include dairy, gluten, high-fat foods, and certain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed (often referred to as FODMAPs). Keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any subsequent symptoms may help identify potential triggers.

The relief you experience when lying flat could also suggest that your pain is related to pressure or tension in the abdominal area. When you lie down, the abdominal muscles relax, which may alleviate discomfort caused by muscle tension or spasms. This could also indicate that your pain is not solely gastrointestinal but may involve musculoskeletal factors, especially if you have a history of physical strain or injury.

While your symptoms may seem manageable, it is important to consider the frequency and severity of your abdominal pain. If you find that the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as significant changes in bowel habits, weight loss, fever, or vomiting, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests, imaging studies, or referrals to specialists if necessary.

In summary, while lying flat may provide temporary relief from your abdominal pain, it is essential to investigate the underlying causes of your symptoms. Keeping track of your pain episodes, associated symptoms, and any dietary factors can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. If your symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is advisable to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, especially in managing chronic or recurrent abdominal pain.
