Rare Morning Erections at 28: Should You See a Doctor? - Urology

The frequency of morning erections is very low?

Hello, doctor.
I am 28 years old and have noticed that I rarely experience morning erections, almost none at all.
I saw that someone previously asked about this, and the doctor mentioned that it typically occurs only if one drinks a lot of water before bed and has normal nerve conduction.
I usually use the restroom before going to bed, and I really do have very few morning erections, possibly less than once every two weeks.
However, I still experience nocturnal erections.
Should I seek medical evaluation?

Hello: I personally believe it is not necessary, but I recommend maintaining regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate rest to ensure good sexual function.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Experiencing rare morning erections at the age of 28 can be concerning, especially if it is a significant change from your previous experiences. Morning erections, also known as nocturnal penile tumescence, are a normal physiological response that occurs during the REM (rapid eye movement) phase of sleep. They are typically a sign of healthy blood flow and nerve function in the penis.
The frequency of morning erections can vary widely among individuals and can be influenced by several factors, including age, hormonal levels, psychological state, and overall health. In your case, the fact that you still experience nighttime erections suggests that your erectile function is likely intact. However, the infrequency of morning erections may warrant further investigation, especially if it is a new development for you.

Several factors could contribute to the decrease in morning erections:
1. Sleep Patterns: The quality and duration of your sleep can significantly impact the occurrence of morning erections. If you are not getting enough REM sleep, this could reduce the frequency of these erections.

2. Hormonal Levels: Testosterone plays a crucial role in sexual function, including the occurrence of morning erections. Low testosterone levels can lead to reduced libido and fewer spontaneous erections. A simple blood test can help determine your testosterone levels.

3. Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, and depression can all affect sexual function. If you are experiencing any psychological stressors, they may be contributing to the changes in your erectile function.

4. Lifestyle Factors: Diet, exercise, and substance use (such as alcohol and tobacco) can also impact erectile function. A healthy lifestyle can promote better sexual health.

5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular issues, can affect blood flow and nerve function, leading to erectile difficulties.

Given that you mentioned the infrequency of morning erections but still experience nighttime erections, it may not be an immediate cause for alarm. However, if this change is accompanied by other symptoms, such as difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection during sexual activity, a decrease in libido, or any other concerning signs, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional.

A visit to a doctor, particularly a urologist, can provide you with a comprehensive evaluation. They may conduct a physical examination, review your medical history, and possibly order blood tests to check hormone levels and assess overall health. This will help determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed.

In conclusion, while occasional changes in the frequency of morning erections can be normal, it is essential to pay attention to your body and any accompanying symptoms. If you have concerns, especially if this is a significant change for you, seeking medical advice is a prudent step. Early intervention can help address any potential issues and ensure that you maintain good sexual health as you age.
