The discharge after a miscarriage has an odor?
Hello Doctor: I had a medical abortion on February 16, and around March 9, my lochia turned clear.
After that, the discharge became watery, increased in volume, and was enough to soak my underwear, accompanied by a fishy odor.
I would like to know if this is lochia or discharge? Is this normal? Thank you.

A physician may not administer treatment, prescribe medication, or provide a diagnosis without a personal examination.
Hello, based on your description, it is possible that you are experiencing genital inflammation.
I recommend that you consult a gynecologist for an evaluation, who can then determine whether further tests and treatment are necessary based on your condition.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

After a miscarriage, it is common for women to experience a variety of vaginal discharges as the body goes through the process of recovery. The discharge that follows a miscarriage is often referred to as "lochia," which is the term used to describe the vaginal discharge that occurs after childbirth or miscarriage. Lochia can vary in color, consistency, and odor, and it typically goes through several stages as the body heals.
In the early days following a miscarriage, lochia may be bright red and may contain small clots, similar to a menstrual period. As time progresses, the discharge usually transitions to a pink or brown color and becomes less heavy. Eventually, it may become lighter in color, often turning clear or watery. This transition can take several weeks, and the duration can vary from person to person.
Regarding your specific situation, the fact that your discharge has become more watery and has a fishy odor raises some concerns. While it is not uncommon for lochia to have a mild odor, a strong or foul smell can indicate an infection. Infections can occur after a miscarriage, especially if there are retained products of conception or if the cervix is still open, allowing bacteria to enter the uterus. Symptoms of infection may include fever, chills, increased pain, or a significant change in the discharge's odor or color.
It is important to differentiate between normal lochia and potential signs of infection. Normal lochia should gradually decrease in volume and change in color without a strong odor. If you are experiencing a significant increase in the amount of discharge, especially if it is soaking through your underwear, along with a strong odor, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform an examination to determine if there is an infection or any retained tissue that may require treatment.
In summary, while some changes in discharge after a miscarriage are normal, the presence of a strong, fishy odor and increased volume may indicate a need for further evaluation. It is always best to err on the side of caution and consult with your healthcare provider to ensure that you are healing properly and to rule out any complications. They may recommend a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or laboratory tests to assess your condition and provide appropriate treatment if necessary. Your health and well-being are paramount, and timely medical advice can help address any concerns you may have.
