Temporary vs. Permanent Dentures: Who Should Handle Your Fitting? - Dentistry

Temporary dentures and permanent dentures?

I had a temporary denture placed two days ago and I plan to get a permanent denture in a few days.
My current question is: why was the temporary denture installed by a nurse? Is that acceptable? Additionally, does the nurse have the proper certification to create and install temporary dentures? Shouldn't the entire procedure be performed by a dentist, rather than being handled by a nurse or assistant? I am not very knowledgeable about this and would like to ask for clarification from a physician at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Thank you!

The fabrication and fitting of temporary dentures should be performed by a dentist.
When applying the adhesive, a nurse may assist with the application, after which the dentist will place the denture in the patient's mouth and proceed with any necessary removal of excess adhesive or occlusal adjustments.

When it comes to the fitting and installation of temporary dentures, it is essential to understand the roles of dental professionals involved in the process. Typically, the primary responsibility for the fitting and adjustment of any type of dentures, whether temporary or permanent, lies with a licensed dentist. Dentists are trained to assess the oral cavity, determine the appropriate type of denture, and ensure that it fits correctly to avoid complications such as discomfort or misalignment.

In many dental practices, dental assistants or nurses may assist in the process, particularly with tasks that do not require clinical judgment or specialized training. For instance, a nurse or dental assistant may help apply adhesive or assist the dentist during the fitting process. However, the actual fitting and adjustment of the dentures should be performed by the dentist. This is because the dentist has the necessary training and expertise to evaluate the fit, make adjustments, and address any complications that may arise.

Regarding your concern about whether nurses have the qualifications to install temporary dentures, it is important to note that while they may assist in the process, they do not typically have the authority to perform the fitting independently. The installation of dentures involves clinical skills that require a dental license, which nurses do not possess. Therefore, while they can support the dentist in the procedure, they cannot replace the dentist's role in fitting and adjusting dentures.

In your case, if a nurse helped with the installation of your temporary dentures, it is likely that the dentist was present to oversee the process and ensure that everything was done correctly. If you have concerns about the fitting or the quality of the temporary dentures, it is advisable to discuss these issues directly with your dentist. They can provide you with the necessary adjustments or modifications to ensure your comfort and the proper function of the dentures.

Moreover, it is crucial to understand that temporary dentures are designed to be a short-term solution while you await the fabrication of permanent dentures. They are typically made from less durable materials and are not intended for long-term use. As such, they may not fit as well as permanent dentures and can be more prone to issues such as cracks or discomfort. If you notice any problems with your temporary dentures, such as cracks or discomfort, it is essential to communicate these issues to your dentist promptly. They can provide guidance on how to manage these problems and ensure that your transition to permanent dentures is as smooth as possible.

In summary, while nurses and dental assistants play supportive roles in the fitting of temporary dentures, the primary responsibility lies with the dentist. If you have any concerns or questions about your treatment, do not hesitate to reach out to your dentist for clarification and assistance. They are there to ensure that you receive the best possible care and that your dental needs are met effectively.
