Questions after clavicle surgery?

Hello, doctor.
I previously had a clavicle fracture, and the doctor recommended surgery to fix it with a plate.
After a year, I had another surgery to remove the plate.
Now, a few months have passed, and I would like to ask:
1.
When I look in the mirror, I notice a sunken area; when doing the same motion on both sides, the normal side shows a protrusion, while the injured side appears flat or slightly sunken.
Is this due to the recent surgery? Will it return to normal over time?
2.
Generally, how long after surgery does it take for the skin to regain normal sensation and not feel numb?
3.
After the surgery, sometimes when I raise my arm, I hear a 'clicking' sound from the bones, which I did not experience before the surgery.
Is this normal? Thank you!

1.
It is possible.

2.
The issue of skin numbness may take six months to a year; sometimes, the numbness may not resolve.

3.
It could be the sound of tendons gliding over the bones.

After undergoing surgery for a fractured clavicle, it is common to have concerns regarding recovery and any lingering symptoms. Let's address your questions one by one, while also providing some additional context about the recovery process.

1. Concerns about the appearance of the clavicle: It is not unusual to notice differences in the contour of the clavicle after surgery, especially following the removal of the plate. The appearance of a "dented" or flatter area on the injured side can be attributed to several factors, including swelling, muscle atrophy, or changes in the bone structure during the healing process. It is important to note that the body undergoes a significant amount of remodeling after surgery, and it may take time for the area to heal fully and for the surrounding muscles to regain strength and volume. Over time, with appropriate rehabilitation and physical therapy, you may see improvements in the appearance and function of the clavicle. However, if the appearance does not improve or if you have concerns about asymmetry, it would be wise to discuss this with your orthopedic surgeon.

2. Numbness or tingling in the skin: After surgery, it is common for patients to experience numbness or tingling in the skin around the surgical site. This can be due to nerve irritation or damage during the procedure, as well as the healing process itself. Generally, it can take several weeks to months for these sensations to resolve completely. In many cases, patients report gradual improvement over time. If the numbness persists beyond a few months or worsens, it is advisable to consult your doctor for further evaluation.

3. Audible sounds from the shoulder: Hearing a "clicking" or "popping" sound when moving your shoulder post-surgery can be concerning, especially if you did not experience this before the operation. These sounds can be caused by several factors, including the movement of tendons over bony structures, changes in the joint mechanics due to the surgery, or residual stiffness in the shoulder joint. While these sounds are often benign, if they are accompanied by pain, discomfort, or a decrease in range of motion, it is important to bring this up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend imaging studies or a physical examination to rule out any complications.

Additional Considerations:
- Rehabilitation: Engaging in a structured rehabilitation program is crucial for recovery after clavicle surgery. Physical therapy can help restore strength, flexibility, and function to the shoulder. It is important to follow your therapist's recommendations and gradually increase the intensity of your exercises as tolerated.

- Monitoring for Complications: While most patients recover well after clavicle surgery, it is essential to monitor for any signs of complications, such as increased pain, swelling, or changes in sensation. If you experience any of these symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider.

- Long-term Outlook: Most patients can expect to return to their normal activities after a clavicle fracture, although the timeline can vary based on the severity of the injury and the individual's healing process. Patience and adherence to rehabilitation protocols are key to achieving the best possible outcome.

In summary, while it is normal to have concerns following clavicle surgery, many of the symptoms you describe can be part of the healing process. Regular follow-ups with your orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist will help ensure that you are on track for a full recovery. If you have any persistent or worsening symptoms, be sure to seek medical advice.
