Is it possible to be pregnant under these circumstances?

Hello Doctor: My menstrual period was from January 25 to 29.
I had unprotected intercourse from January 29 to February 1, but there was no ejaculation.
Since then, I have not had any sexual activity (my average menstrual cycle is about 30 days).
My period in February was delayed by more than a week and has not arrived yet.
I took a pregnancy test on March 1 and 3, both showing one line.
However, on the night of March 3, my period started, but the bleeding was very light, alternating between having blood and not having blood, and it stopped by the 7th.
Normally, I would expect my period to return around April 1, but since mid-March, I have been feeling breast fullness, itchy nipples, occasional lower abdominal pain, lack of appetite, and sometimes nausea (possibly due to my pre-existing gastrointestinal issues).
Typically, when my breasts start to feel full, my period comes shortly after.
Could this indicate a possible pregnancy? I found that I match many early pregnancy symptoms online, but the pregnancy test on March 3 showed only one line.
If it were early pregnancy bleeding, I would expect to see two lines on the test, right? Thank you, Doctor.

Menstruation occurred from January 25 to 29.
There was unprotected sexual intercourse from January 29 to February 1, with no ejaculation.
Since then, there has been no sexual activity (average menstrual cycle is about 30 days).
The menstrual period in February was more than a week late and has not yet arrived.
Pregnancy tests on March 1 and 3 showed one line.
However, on the evening of March 3, menstruation started, but the bleeding was very light, alternating between having blood and not having blood, and it stopped by the 7th.
Normally, menstruation should return around April 1, but since mid-March, I have been feeling breast fullness, itchy nipples, occasional lower abdominal pain, lack of appetite, and sometimes nausea (possibly due to pre-existing gastrointestinal issues).
Usually, when breast fullness begins, menstruation follows within a few days.

More Info

Based on the information you've provided, it seems you're experiencing a range of symptoms that could be associated with early pregnancy, but there are also other factors to consider. Let's break down your situation and clarify the possibilities.

1. Menstrual Cycle and Timing: You mentioned that your menstrual cycle averages around 30 days. If your last period was from January 25 to January 29, and you typically expect your next period around February 25, a delay of over a week would indeed be notable. However, you did experience some bleeding on March 3, which could complicate the interpretation of your symptoms.

2. Pregnancy Testing: You conducted pregnancy tests on March 1 and March 3, both of which returned negative results. Generally, home pregnancy tests are quite reliable when used correctly, especially if taken after a missed period. If you were indeed pregnant at that time, the tests would likely have detected the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine, resulting in a positive reading. The fact that you received negative results suggests that pregnancy is less likely, especially since you had a subsequent period.

3. Symptoms: The symptoms you are experiencing—breast tenderness, itchy nipples, lower abdominal pain, lack of appetite, and occasional nausea—can be attributed to various factors, including hormonal fluctuations related to your menstrual cycle, stress, or even gastrointestinal issues. It’s important to note that many women experience premenstrual symptoms that can mimic early pregnancy signs.

4. Light Bleeding: The light bleeding you experienced after your negative pregnancy tests could be a sign of an irregular period or breakthrough bleeding, which can occur for various reasons, including hormonal changes or stress. If this bleeding was significantly lighter than your usual menstrual flow and was not accompanied by typical menstrual symptoms, it might warrant further investigation.

5. Next Steps: Given that your symptoms are persisting and you are feeling uncertain, it may be beneficial to wait until your next expected period and then retest if it does not arrive. If you continue to experience symptoms or if your menstrual cycle remains irregular, consulting with a healthcare provider would be advisable. They can perform a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than home urine tests, and can also evaluate your symptoms more thoroughly.

6. When to Seek Medical Attention: If you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of conditions that require immediate care.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may align with early pregnancy signs, the negative pregnancy tests and the timing of your menstrual cycle suggest that pregnancy is unlikely. However, hormonal changes and other factors can cause similar symptoms. Monitoring your cycle and symptoms, along with consulting a healthcare professional if needed, will provide you with the best path forward.
