After root canal treatment, the biting surface may feel sensitive or sore?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask, after undergoing root canal treatment on a molar about a month ago, I feel a slight sensitivity when tapping the occlusal surface with my finger.
Is this normal or abnormal? Thank you.
Currently, there is no swelling of the gums or pain in the tooth; it’s just that when I tap it, I feel a slight sensitivity (there is no sensation when tapping the buccal side, only when tapping the occlusal surface).

Dear Anonymous,
Hello! After root canal treatment, if you experience sensitivity when tapping on the tooth but do not have any swelling of the gums or pain in the tooth, it generally indicates that there is no infection.
An X-ray should be taken to confirm this! Please communicate frequently with your dentist.
Thank you! Wishing you well!
Sincerely,
Dr.

After undergoing a root canal treatment, it is not uncommon for patients to experience some sensitivity in the treated tooth, especially when pressure is applied, such as when tapping on the biting surface. This sensitivity can be attributed to several factors related to the procedure and the healing process.
Firstly, root canal treatment involves the removal of the infected or inflamed pulp tissue from inside the tooth. This process can lead to inflammation in the surrounding tissues, which may cause sensitivity or discomfort. The sensitivity you are experiencing, particularly when tapping on the biting surface, may be a result of this inflammation. It is important to note that this sensitivity is generally temporary and should gradually subside as the tissues heal.
Secondly, the tooth may have been subjected to some trauma during the procedure, which can also contribute to post-treatment sensitivity. The dental instruments used during the root canal can cause minor trauma to the surrounding bone and gum tissues, leading to discomfort when pressure is applied.
Additionally, the filling material used to seal the root canals can sometimes cause a sensation of pressure or sensitivity as it settles and integrates with the tooth structure. If the filling material is slightly high or uneven, it can lead to discomfort when biting or tapping on the tooth. In such cases, a follow-up visit to your dentist may be necessary to adjust the filling.
It is also worth mentioning that while you are not experiencing any swelling or pain in the gums, it is essential to monitor the sensitivity. If the sensitivity persists beyond a few weeks, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling, pain, or changes in the bite, it would be advisable to consult your dentist. They may perform an examination to ensure that there are no complications, such as an infection or a need for further treatment.
In summary, mild sensitivity after a root canal treatment, especially when tapping on the biting surface, can be considered normal and is often a part of the healing process. However, it is crucial to keep an open line of communication with your dentist regarding any concerns you may have. Regular follow-up appointments can help ensure that the healing process is proceeding as expected and that any issues are addressed promptly. If you have any further questions or if the sensitivity does not improve, do not hesitate to reach out to your dental care provider for guidance.
