Height increase issues?

Question (April 1, 2017): I am currently a high school freshman (16 years old) with a height of 165.5 cm and a weight of 56 kg.
I do weight training once a week.
My growth spurt period has already passed; during middle school, I grew 5 cm in six months.
After graduating, I entered high school, and my height only increased by 2 mm from the first to the second semester.
Recently, I have been drinking about one and a half cans of milk daily (approximately 500 cc), taking two calcium tablets of 300 mg each, and going to bed around 11 PM.
My ideal height is between 173-175 cm.
Can you help me assess whether it is possible to grow an additional 8 cm in the remaining years to meet my height goal?

Aqi Kong, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/01

Dr. Ye Qingnian reply Orthopedics

During the first year of high school, if a person only grows 2 millimeters, it indicates that the growth plates responsible for height increase have already fused, making further growth difficult.
Supplementing with calcium will not be beneficial.

The question of whether one can still grow taller after the age of 16 is a common concern among adolescents. While the growth plates in the bones typically close after puberty, which generally occurs between the ages of 16 and 18 for most individuals, there are still some factors to consider that may influence height potential.

Firstly, it is important to understand that height is largely determined by genetics. If your parents are tall, you are more likely to be tall as well. However, environmental factors such as nutrition, physical activity, and overall health also play significant roles in growth.
At 16 years old, you are still within a window where growth may be possible, albeit limited. The growth plates, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones, are responsible for bone growth. Once these plates close, which can be assessed through an X-ray, further height increase is unlikely. If you have not yet had an X-ray to check the status of your growth plates, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional for this evaluation.

In terms of nutrition, a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for growth. Calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals are vital for bone health. Drinking milk, as you mentioned, is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, which are important for bone development. Additionally, ensuring that you consume enough protein from sources like meat, fish, eggs, and legumes can support muscle and bone health.

Physical activity is another important factor. Engaging in regular exercise, particularly weight-bearing activities like running, jumping, and strength training, can promote bone health and potentially stimulate growth hormone production. However, it is essential to balance exercise with adequate rest and recovery, as overtraining can lead to fatigue and hinder growth.

Sleep is also a critical component of growth. Growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep, so ensuring you get enough quality sleep each night is important. Aim for 8-10 hours of sleep per night, especially during your teenage years when your body is still developing.

While you may have experienced a slowdown in growth during your high school years, it is not uncommon for growth patterns to vary. Some individuals may experience growth spurts later in their teenage years, while others may not. It is difficult to predict exactly how much taller you may grow, but with proper nutrition, exercise, and sleep, you can maximize your growth potential.

In conclusion, while the likelihood of significant height increase after 16 may be limited, there are still steps you can take to support your growth. Focus on maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and ensuring adequate sleep. If you have concerns about your growth or development, consider consulting with a healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice and possibly assess your growth plates. Remember, every individual grows at their own pace, and it's important to focus on overall health and well-being rather than just height.
