A lump near the armpit suddenly enlarged?
Hello, Dr.
Lai: I have had a hard lump about the size of a mung bean near my right armpit for a long time.
Since it has not been painful and has not increased in size, I have ignored it.
However, in the past three days, the lump suddenly enlarged.
When I raise my right arm, there is a protrusion approximately 1.5 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 0.8 cm high, shaped like an oval peanut.
Over the past month, I have been taking traditional Chinese medicine to regulate my menstrual cycle, and I have a viral wart on the sole of my foot.
When I visited a dermatologist on Friday, the doctor injected a medication that is used for cancer treatment, stating that the side effects are minimal.
I am unsure if this is related to the injection.
I feel that the hard lump is superficial and can be grasped, not deep.
It is painful when touched or pulled.
Which specialist should I see? Is this lymphadenopathy?

When it comes to the sudden enlargement of a lump in the armpit, there are several important factors to consider. The lump you described, which has increased in size from a small pea to a larger, oval-shaped mass, could potentially be a swollen lymph node. Lymph nodes can swell for various reasons, including infections, inflammation, or more serious conditions like malignancies. Given that you have a history of a small lump that was previously stable, the recent change in size warrants further investigation.
The fact that you have been taking herbal medicine for menstrual regulation and have recently received an injection for a viral wart adds complexity to your situation. While it's unlikely that the injection for the wart directly caused the lymph node to swell, it is possible that your body is reacting to the treatment or that the injection site is somehow related to the lymphatic system.
Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to a variety of reasons, including:
1. Infection: This is the most common cause. The lymph nodes can swell in response to infections in the area they drain. For example, an infection in the arm or hand could cause the lymph nodes in the armpit to enlarge.
2. Inflammation: Conditions such as autoimmune diseases can cause lymph nodes to swell.
3. Malignancy: Lymph nodes can also enlarge due to cancers, either from lymphatic tissue (like lymphoma) or metastasis from other cancers.
4. Reactions to medications: Some medications can cause lymphadenopathy as a side effect.
Given that the lump is now painful when touched or pulled, this could indicate inflammation or irritation in the area. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional to evaluate this lump further.
You should consider seeing a primary care physician or a specialist in internal medicine first. They can perform a physical examination and may order imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the characteristics of the lump. If necessary, they may refer you to a specialist, such as a hematologist or an oncologist, for further evaluation, especially if there is a concern for malignancy.
In the meantime, monitor any additional symptoms you may experience, such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or any changes in your overall health. These symptoms can provide important clues to your healthcare provider regarding the underlying cause of the lymph node enlargement.
In summary, while the sudden enlargement of a lump in the armpit can be concerning, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly. A thorough evaluation will help determine the cause of the swelling and guide appropriate treatment.
