Suspected miscarriage, but with very little bleeding?

Hello, Dr.
Tsao.
I would like to ask if it is possible to be pregnant when experiencing suspected menstrual cramps.
My average menstrual cycle is about 33 days, and my last period was from March 9 to March 14.
I had unprotected intercourse on March 27 and 28.
I took a pregnancy test on April 8, which showed a very faint second line.
My menstrual period started on April 10, with a slight amount of pink blood.
On the same day, I visited a gynecologist, had a transvaginal ultrasound, and a urine test, which showed one line.
The doctor mentioned that she couldn't see anything but said it would be detectable after five weeks.
The doctor prescribed progesterone for three days.
I would like to know if taking progesterone could stop my menstrual flow, or if it will continue.
Is it possible that I could still be in a state of pregnancy?

Hello, if you suspect you might be pregnant, it's best to wait.
It's always advisable to use contraception beforehand, as you cannot rely on the safe period.
If your period is more than a week late, it is recommended to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to early pregnancy and the presence of minimal bleeding, it's important to understand the various possibilities and implications. The situation you've described raises several key points that are worth discussing in detail.

Firstly, it is indeed possible to experience minimal bleeding during early pregnancy, which can sometimes be mistaken for a menstrual period. This phenomenon is often referred to as "implantation bleeding," which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of the uterus. This type of bleeding is typically light and may be pink or brown in color, differing from the heavier, red flow associated with a normal menstrual period. However, not all bleeding in early pregnancy is benign; it can also indicate potential complications such as a threatened miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.

In your case, the timeline you provided suggests that you had unprotected intercourse around March 27-28, and then experienced a very faint positive pregnancy test on April 8, followed by a light pink bleeding on April 10. The faint line on the pregnancy test could indicate a very early pregnancy, but it could also be a sign of a chemical pregnancy, where the embryo does not develop properly. The fact that you experienced bleeding shortly after the positive test could suggest that the pregnancy is not progressing as expected.

Regarding the use of progesterone (黄体素), it is often prescribed to help support early pregnancy, particularly in cases where there is a risk of miscarriage. Progesterone can help maintain the uterine lining and may reduce the likelihood of bleeding. However, it is important to note that while progesterone can help stabilize a pregnancy, it does not guarantee that bleeding will stop or that the pregnancy will continue. Some women may still experience bleeding even while on progesterone, and this does not necessarily indicate that the pregnancy is failing.

If your menstrual cycle is typically around 33 days, and you had a light bleeding episode on April 10, it is possible that this could be related to your menstrual cycle rather than a viable pregnancy. If the bleeding continues or worsens, or if you experience significant pain, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. An ultrasound may be necessary to determine the status of the pregnancy and to rule out any complications.

In summary, minimal bleeding in early pregnancy can occur for various reasons, and while it can sometimes be a normal part of the process, it can also indicate potential issues. The best course of action is to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation, including repeat pregnancy testing and possibly an ultrasound, to assess the situation more accurately. Monitoring your symptoms and staying in close contact with your healthcare provider will be essential in managing your health and any potential pregnancy complications.
