Throat issues

Hello, doctor.
I have had a throat inflammation for almost a month.
I previously visited National Taiwan University Hospital, and the doctor said it was caused by acid reflux.
I have been taking the medication as prescribed, but it doesn't seem to be improving much.
Could there be other factors contributing to this? I would like to ask how long I need to take the medication before I see improvement.
Also, I sometimes notice small white spots in my throat; is that normal? Should I remove them?

Lai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/13

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, if chronic pharyngitis is caused by gastroesophageal reflux, in addition to medication management, dietary control is also necessary.
It often takes several months for symptoms to gradually improve.
As for the white spots, it is recommended to rinse your mouth frequently and not to pick at them with your hands.
If there is no significant improvement in symptoms, it is advisable to continue follow-up visits for treatment.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Throat inflammation, or pharyngitis, can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections (viral or bacterial), allergies, irritants, and conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In your case, it seems that your throat inflammation has been attributed to acid reflux, which is a common cause of chronic throat irritation.
When acid from the stomach flows back into the esophagus, it can irritate the lining of the throat, leading to symptoms such as soreness, a burning sensation, and even the development of small white spots, which may be a result of irritation or inflammation in the throat. These spots can sometimes be associated with other conditions, such as oral thrush or tonsillitis, but they are not uncommon in cases of throat inflammation due to reflux.

Regarding your treatment, it’s important to follow your physician's recommendations, which likely include medications to reduce stomach acid, such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers. The duration of treatment can vary based on the severity of your symptoms and how well you respond to the medication. In many cases, it may take several weeks to notice significant improvement, especially if the inflammation has been present for a month. If you do not see improvement after a reasonable period, or if your symptoms worsen, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

As for the small white spots in your throat, it is generally not advisable to attempt to remove them yourself. Doing so could lead to further irritation or even infection. Instead, you should discuss these symptoms with your doctor, who may perform a thorough examination to determine the exact cause of the spots and whether any additional treatment is necessary.

In addition to medication, there are several supportive measures you can take to alleviate throat inflammation:
1. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to keep your throat moist and help thin mucus.

2. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, which may help soothe your throat.

3. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong odors, and other irritants that can exacerbate throat inflammation.

4. Dietary Adjustments: If GERD is a contributing factor, consider dietary changes such as avoiding spicy, acidic, or fatty foods that can trigger reflux.

5. Throat Lozenges: Sucking on throat lozenges or hard candies can help keep your throat moist and provide temporary relief.

If your throat inflammation persists or if you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty swallowing, fever, or significant pain, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires further investigation.

In summary, throat inflammation can have multiple causes, and while GERD may be a significant factor in your case, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. They can guide you on the appropriate duration of treatment and address any concerns you may have about your symptoms, including the presence of white spots in your throat.
