Sudden Painful Lump Under Left Armpit: Causes and Concerns - Oncology

A painful lump suddenly appeared under my left armpit?

Last night, I suddenly felt pain under my left armpit and found a lump inside.
It doesn't feel hard like a lymph node (I had lymph nodes when I was younger, but they have since disappeared); it feels more like a mosquito bite, but it's beneath the skin.
The surface looks fine, but it hurts when I move my arm, and it hurts even more when I press on it.
This appeared suddenly.
Could this be lymphadenitis? I've been experiencing more severe allergies recently, and I had a slight cold before, but I'm already better.
I'm not sure if there's any connection.
Thank you in advance!

Hello, online friend: Usually, pain that worsens with pressure is often caused by inflammation or a localized tissue infection.
It is recommended to monitor the situation for a period of time.

Sudden pain and the presence of a lump under the left armpit can be concerning, and it's important to consider various potential causes. Based on your description, the lump feels different from a typical lymph node, which is usually firm and can be tender when inflamed. Instead, you describe it as more akin to a mosquito bite, which suggests it may not be a lymph node issue.
Several factors could contribute to the sudden appearance of a painful lump in the armpit area:
1. Infection: Localized infections, such as a skin infection (e.g., abscess or folliculitis), can cause swelling and pain. If the lump is warm, red, or increasingly painful, it could indicate an infection that may require medical attention.

2. Lymphadenopathy: While you mentioned that it doesn't feel like a lymph node, it's still possible that nearby lymph nodes are reacting to an infection or inflammation elsewhere in the body. This could be related to your recent cold or allergies, as the immune system can respond to various triggers.

3. Muscle Strain: Pain in the armpit can also arise from muscle strain or injury, especially if you've been using your arms more than usual or have changed your physical activity. This can lead to localized pain and discomfort.

4. Allergic Reaction: Given your history of allergies, it’s possible that the lump could be a result of an allergic reaction, such as hives or angioedema, which can cause localized swelling and pain.

5. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts or other types of cysts can form under the skin and may become painful if they become inflamed or infected.

6. Other Conditions: More serious conditions, such as tumors (benign or malignant), can also present as lumps in the armpit area. However, these are less common and typically present with additional symptoms.

Recommendations:
- Observation: Monitor the lump for changes in size, shape, or pain level. If it continues to grow or becomes increasingly painful, seek medical attention.

- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can help alleviate discomfort.

- Avoid Manipulation: Try not to press or manipulate the lump excessively, as this can exacerbate pain or lead to further inflammation.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the lump persists for more than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms (such as fever, chills, or systemic symptoms), it’s advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies or lab tests to determine the underlying cause.

In summary, while the lump under your left armpit could be due to several benign causes, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical advice if there are any concerning changes. Your recent history of allergies and a cold may be related, but a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional will provide clarity and appropriate management.
