Blood in the stool?
I have recently noticed blood in my stool; there is blood on the toilet paper and in the toilet, which is bright red.
However, the blood in the toilet is on the surface of the water, not on the stool itself.
My menstrual period is due in two to three days.
This is the first time I have seen blood in my stool, and I am wondering if it is related to my menstrual cycle or if it could be hemorrhoids.
Could this be hemorrhoids?

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
This situation likely indicates a higher possibility of hemorrhoidal bleeding.
As long as there is no further bleeding, it should not be a concern.
It is recommended to avoid constipation during this period and to shorten the time spent on the toilet.
Warm sitz baths may help alleviate symptoms, and you can also purchase over-the-counter hemorrhoid suppositories.
It is best not to take stool softeners indiscriminately.
If bleeding persists, it is advisable to consult a physician.
Regarding whether this is related to menstrual issues, it may be best to seek clarification from a gynecologist.

More Info
When it comes to the presence of blood in stool, it can be concerning and raises questions about the underlying cause. Based on your description, the blood you are noticing is bright red and appears on the toilet paper and the surface of the water in the toilet bowl, rather than mixed in with the stool itself. This presentation is often indicative of a lower gastrointestinal issue, and one of the most common causes is hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area that can become inflamed and bleed, especially during bowel movements. The bright red color of the blood is characteristic of bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract, which includes the rectum and anus. Other symptoms of hemorrhoids may include itching, discomfort, or a feeling of fullness in the rectal area. If you have been experiencing straining during bowel movements or constipation, this could contribute to the development of hemorrhoids.
However, while hemorrhoids are a common cause of rectal bleeding, they are not the only possibility. Other conditions that can cause similar symptoms include anal fissures (small tears in the lining of the anus), diverticular disease, or even more serious conditions such as colorectal polyps or cancer. Given that you mentioned your menstrual cycle is approaching, it is unlikely that your menstrual bleeding is related to the blood you are seeing in your stool, as menstrual blood would not typically appear in the toilet in this manner.
It is essential to consider additional factors such as your overall health, any accompanying symptoms (like pain or changes in bowel habits), and your medical history. If you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, or if the bleeding persists, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may recommend a physical examination, and possibly a colonoscopy or other imaging studies, to determine the exact cause of the bleeding.
In summary, while hemorrhoids are a likely cause of the bright red blood you are observing, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment options. If you experience significant pain, changes in bowel habits, or if the bleeding continues, do not hesitate to seek medical care promptly. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and prevent complications.
