Unilateral nipple itching?
Recently, I've been experiencing itching in my left nipple, and it seems to be more pronounced on that side.
During my ovulation period leading up to my menstrual cycle, my left breast appears slightly larger than my right breast.
Could this be a sign of breast cancer? I usually sleep on my side; could that be the reason for the difference in size? Is the itching of the nipple indicative of any underlying condition? Should I go to the hospital for an examination? I've been worried for a while, and while my breasts feel firm and swollen (even though my period hasn't started yet), I don't feel any hard lumps.
Pressing on them causes some pain.

Dr. Wu Jianting reply Breast and Thyroid
Breast swelling may occur before and after menstruation due to hormonal changes in the body, and it may not be perfectly symmetrical.
Please pay attention to your observations.
It is recommended to perform breast self-examinations 7-10 days after your period ends.
If you still have concerns, please visit a clinic for an examination.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
When it comes to unilateral nipple itching, particularly when accompanied by changes in breast size and discomfort, it’s essential to consider a variety of potential causes. While the concern for breast cancer is understandable, especially when experiencing new or unusual symptoms, it’s important to approach this situation with a broader perspective.
Firstly, itching of the nipple can occur for several reasons, including:
1. Hormonal Changes: The menstrual cycle can cause fluctuations in hormone levels, which may lead to breast tenderness, swelling, and changes in size. This is particularly common in the luteal phase of the cycle, which occurs after ovulation and before menstruation. The increase in estrogen and progesterone can lead to water retention and swelling in breast tissue, making one breast appear larger than the other.
2. Skin Irritation: Itching can also be a result of skin irritation or allergic reactions. This could be due to soaps, detergents, lotions, or even fabrics that come into contact with the skin. If you’ve recently changed any products, consider whether they might be causing the irritation.
3. Infections: Conditions such as fungal infections or dermatitis can lead to localized itching. If the area is red, swollen, or has a rash, it may indicate a dermatological issue that could require treatment.
4. Mastitis: Though more common in breastfeeding women, mastitis can occur in non-lactating women as well. It is an infection of the breast tissue that can cause swelling, redness, and pain, along with itching.
5. Breast Cysts or Fibrocystic Changes: These benign conditions can cause changes in breast tissue, leading to discomfort and sometimes itching. They are often influenced by hormonal changes and can cause one breast to feel different than the other.
6. Breast Cancer: While it’s less common, breast cancer can present with symptoms such as itching, changes in breast size, and pain. However, these symptoms are usually accompanied by other signs such as a lump, changes in the skin texture, or discharge from the nipple.
Given your symptoms of unilateral itching, slight swelling, and tenderness, it’s advisable to monitor the situation closely. If the itching persists, or if you notice any new changes such as a lump, persistent pain, or changes in the skin (like redness or dimpling), it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and could recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to rule out any serious conditions. They may also suggest a skin examination to check for any dermatological issues.
In the meantime, consider avoiding any potential irritants, such as harsh soaps or tight clothing, and maintain good skin hygiene. If you suspect that your sleeping position might be contributing to discomfort, try adjusting your sleep posture to see if it alleviates some of the symptoms.
In conclusion, while the concern for breast cancer is valid, many other benign conditions could explain your symptoms. It’s essential to remain vigilant but also to seek professional advice to ensure peace of mind and appropriate care.
