Inability to focus the eyes?
Hello Doctor, I apologize for the interruption.
I would like to ask about my husband, who has been experiencing frequent dizziness and sudden inability to focus his eyes for the past two weeks.
He has undergone hearing tests and an electrocardiogram, both of which came back normal.
Could this indicate an issue with his eyes? Additionally, he has a habit of drinking alcohol during his downtime, but he gets sufficient sleep.
Since his job requires him to drive, this could have an impact.
Thank you for your assistance.

Hello! It sounds like your husband is experiencing some concerning symptoms with his vision and balance. Blurred vision and dizziness can be caused by a variety of factors, and it’s important to consider both ocular and systemic issues.
Firstly, the fact that he has been experiencing blurred vision and difficulty focusing could indicate several potential eye-related problems. Common causes of blurred vision include refractive errors (like nearsightedness or astigmatism), cataracts, or even more serious conditions like retinal detachment or macular degeneration. Given that he has had normal hearing tests and an ECG, it suggests that the issue may not be related to inner ear problems or heart issues, which can also cause dizziness.
Dizziness can sometimes be associated with visual disturbances. For instance, when the eyes are unable to focus properly, it can lead to a sensation of imbalance or dizziness. This is particularly true if he is experiencing significant fluctuations in his vision. Additionally, prolonged screen time or focusing on tasks without adequate breaks can lead to digital eye strain, which may cause both blurred vision and dizziness.
Another important factor to consider is his lifestyle habits, particularly alcohol consumption. Alcohol can affect the central nervous system and lead to symptoms such as dizziness and impaired coordination. It can also exacerbate any underlying eye issues, particularly if he is consuming alcohol in excess. While moderate drinking may not have a significant impact, it’s worth discussing with him the importance of moderation, especially given his symptoms.
Sleep quality is another crucial aspect. Although you mentioned that he has sufficient sleep, the quality of that sleep matters. Poor sleep can lead to fatigue, which can exacerbate feelings of dizziness and affect cognitive functions, including visual processing.
Given that he drives for work, it’s essential to address these symptoms promptly. Driving with blurred vision or dizziness can be dangerous not only for him but also for others on the road. I recommend that he sees an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye examination. This should include checking for refractive errors, assessing the health of the retina, and evaluating for any signs of cataracts or other ocular conditions.
In the meantime, encourage him to take regular breaks from screens, practice the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), and ensure he stays hydrated. If he continues to experience these symptoms or if they worsen, it’s crucial to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
In summary, blurred vision and dizziness can stem from various eye-related issues or systemic factors. A thorough eye examination is essential to determine the underlying cause and to ensure that he can continue to drive safely and maintain his overall health. Please keep an eye on his symptoms, and don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
