Postoperative scar issues?
Hello Dr.
Wu:
I had surgery in early March, and I had my stitches removed a week later.
Since then, I have been using 3M silicone tape, and it has been two months now.
I would like to ask how long I need to continue using the silicone tape to minimize the visibility of post-surgical scars.
Additionally, I often hear people say that after surgery, one should avoid dark foods, such as soy sauce, etc.
Is this a correct belief? Thank you.

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
The time for using the beauty tape should be sufficient, and it is recommended to proceed with applying scar silicone gel.
For this issue, you should consult your attending physician, as they are most familiar with your condition and can help you choose the appropriate medication.

Post-surgery scar management is an important aspect of recovery that can significantly impact the appearance of scars and overall healing. In your case, you have been using 3M beauty tape for two months after your surgery, and you are inquiring about how long you should continue this practice to minimize the visibility of your scars.
Generally, the use of adhesive tape, especially silicone-based products like 3M beauty tape, can be beneficial in scar management. These tapes help to keep the scar hydrated, reduce tension on the scar tissue, and can improve the overall appearance of the scar. The typical recommendation for using such tapes is to continue for at least 6 to 12 weeks post-surgery, depending on the healing process and the specific characteristics of your scar. Some practitioners suggest that using the tape for up to six months can yield even better results, particularly for larger or more prominent scars.
You should monitor your scar closely during this period. If you notice any signs of irritation or if the tape is causing discomfort, it may be wise to take breaks or consult your healthcare provider. After the initial period of using the tape, you can gradually reduce the frequency of application, but it is advisable to continue using it at least intermittently for several months to optimize scar healing.
Regarding the dietary restrictions you mentioned, such as avoiding dark foods like soy sauce, this is a common belief but not necessarily supported by strong scientific evidence. The idea behind this recommendation is that certain foods may contribute to hyperpigmentation or inflammation, which could potentially affect scar healing. However, there is limited research to definitively prove that avoiding specific foods will prevent scar formation or improve scar appearance.
A balanced diet rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C and E, can support skin healing and may help in the recovery process. Foods high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, can also be beneficial. Staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will further support your body’s healing processes.
In conclusion, continue using the 3M beauty tape for at least another month or two, and consider extending its use for up to six months for optimal results. As for dietary restrictions, focus on a balanced diet rather than avoiding specific foods unless advised by your healthcare provider. Always consult with your surgeon or a dermatologist for personalized advice tailored to your specific situation, as they can provide the best guidance based on your individual healing progress and skin type.
