Hard lumps in the genital area?
Hello, I would like to ask about a small hard lump that has recently appeared near the base of my penis (but not on the penis itself).
It has been there for about 3 to 4 days.
The lump is not round in shape, and while it is not visibly protruding, it can be felt when touched.
It does not hurt when left alone, but it is painful when pressed hard.
Could you please tell me if this is inflammation or something else?
Mr. Hong, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/04/24
Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine the issue.
If it is causing significant distress, please seek medical attention promptly.
A proper examination is necessary to identify the problem and determine the appropriate course of action.

When it comes to hard lumps near the base of the penis, there are several potential causes that should be considered. It’s important to approach this issue with caution and to seek a professional medical evaluation for an accurate diagnosis. Here are some possible explanations for the hard lump you are experiencing:
1. Peyronie's Disease: This condition is characterized by the development of fibrous scar tissue inside the penis, which can lead to curved, painful erections. While it typically presents as a plaque or lump on the shaft of the penis, it can sometimes be felt near the base. The lump may not be painful unless pressure is applied.
2. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-cancerous lumps that can occur anywhere on the body, including the genital area. They are usually painless and can feel firm to the touch. They occur when sebaceous glands become blocked, leading to the accumulation of sebum.
3. Lymphadenopathy: Swollen lymph nodes can sometimes present as lumps in the groin area. If the lump is firm and not painful, it may be a lymph node reacting to an infection or inflammation elsewhere in the body.
4. Infections: Certain infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can cause lumps or swelling in the genital area. If there are accompanying symptoms such as discharge, pain, or changes in urination, it is crucial to seek medical attention.
5. Tumors: While less common, lumps can sometimes be indicative of benign or malignant tumors. Any new or unusual growth should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out serious conditions.
6. Trauma or Injury: If there has been any recent trauma to the area, it could result in localized swelling or a lump. This could be due to a hematoma or localized inflammation.
Given that the lump has been present for a few days and is only painful when pressure is applied, it may not be an immediate cause for alarm. However, it is essential to monitor the lump for any changes in size, shape, or pain level. If it persists, grows, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, discharge, or changes in urination, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of management, it is advisable to avoid any manipulation of the lump to prevent irritation or infection. Maintaining good hygiene in the genital area is also important. If the lump is determined to be a cyst or a benign condition, it may not require treatment unless it becomes bothersome or painful.
In conclusion, while there are several benign explanations for the hard lump near the base of your penis, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough examination and appropriate diagnostic tests. They may recommend imaging studies or a biopsy if necessary to ensure an accurate diagnosis and to rule out any serious conditions. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek professional advice.
