Horizontal ridges on toenails?

Hello, doctor! Recently, I noticed that my toenails have some very fine horizontal lines, with a little bit on each toe.
They don't feel too uneven to the touch, but they are more noticeable under light.
I have taken a photo, here is the link: http://imgur.com/Du8xKJo.
I used to have a habit of picking at my toenails, but I haven't done that recently.
I would like to ask the doctor if this condition is related to that, or if I need to see a doctor.
Thank you, doctor!

Medical regulations stipulate that "physicians must personally examine patients and cannot administer treatment or prescribe medications without doing so," and online diagnosis is also not permitted.

Horizontal ridges on toenails, also known as Beau's lines, can be indicative of various underlying health issues or conditions. These ridges may appear due to a temporary interruption in nail growth, which can be caused by several factors, including physical trauma, systemic illness, nutritional deficiencies, or even certain medications.
In your case, the presence of fine horizontal lines on your toenails could be related to your previous habit of picking at your toenails. This kind of trauma can disrupt the normal growth of the nail, leading to the formation of ridges. However, it is also essential to consider other potential causes. For instance, systemic conditions such as diabetes, psoriasis, or thyroid disorders can also manifest as changes in the nails. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in biotin, zinc, or protein, can affect nail health as well.

Given that you mentioned the ridges are not very pronounced and do not cause discomfort, it may not be an immediate cause for concern. However, if you notice any additional symptoms such as changes in color, thickness, or texture of the nails, or if you experience pain or swelling around the nail bed, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional.
A doctor, particularly a dermatologist, can provide a thorough examination and may suggest tests to rule out any underlying conditions. They can also offer guidance on proper nail care and any necessary treatments if an underlying issue is identified.
In summary, while the horizontal ridges on your toenails may be benign and related to previous trauma, it is always wise to monitor any changes and seek medical advice if you have concerns. Regular check-ups can help ensure that any potential health issues are addressed early on.
