Rectal bleeding
Hello doctor, I previously visited the clinic due to rectal bleeding, and the doctor diagnosed me with hemorrhoids.
After using suppositories for a few days, I recovered.
However, I recently noticed that the toilet water is bright red after a bowel movement, and there is also fresh blood when I wipe.
The bowel movements are smooth and painless, and the stool color is yellow-brown or coffee-colored.
Sometimes, even without a bowel movement, there is blood coming out.
This has been ongoing for two weeks, although there have been a few days of normalcy.
However, if I eat spicy foods, the bleeding starts again.
I usually have a sedentary job, but I do eat fruits and vegetables regularly.
Could this be a sign of colon cancer? Other than the bleeding, I do not have any other discomfort.

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
At the age of 29, the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer is generally relatively low.
Based on your description, it seems more like hemorrhoidal bleeding.
It is recommended to maintain a light diet and good lifestyle habits, avoiding spicy, irritating, and greasy foods.
If symptoms persist without improvement, you may consult a physician for medication or consider undergoing a colonoscopy.

Rectal bleeding can be a concerning symptom, and it's understandable to worry about the possibility of colon cancer, especially if you have a history of hemorrhoids or other gastrointestinal issues. However, it's essential to consider various factors before jumping to conclusions.
Based on your description, it seems that the bleeding is bright red and occurs after bowel movements, which is often indicative of issues in the lower gastrointestinal tract, such as hemorrhoids or anal fissures. Hemorrhoids, which are swollen blood vessels in the rectal area, can easily bleed, especially after straining during a bowel movement or when passing hard stools. The fact that you mentioned the bleeding occurs after consuming spicy foods could also suggest that your rectal tissues are sensitive and may be irritated by certain foods.
The color of the blood is also a significant factor. Bright red blood typically suggests that the source of the bleeding is closer to the anus, while darker blood may indicate bleeding from higher up in the gastrointestinal tract. Since you are experiencing bright red blood and have had a history of hemorrhoids, it is likely that the bleeding is related to this condition rather than colon cancer.
However, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. The presence of blood in the stool, even if it seems to be related to hemorrhoids, should not be ignored, especially if it persists for more than a couple of weeks or if the nature of the bleeding changes. Additionally, if you experience any other symptoms such as significant weight loss, changes in bowel habits, or abdominal pain, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation.
Given your history of rectal bleeding and the recent changes in your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough examination. A colonoscopy may be recommended, especially since you have had previous episodes of rectal bleeding. This procedure allows for direct visualization of the colon and rectum, and it can help rule out any serious conditions, including polyps or cancer.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to hemorrhoids or dietary factors, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult with a healthcare provider for a proper assessment. Regular screenings and being proactive about gastrointestinal health are vital, especially if there is a family history of colorectal cancer. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive straining during bowel movements can also help manage and prevent further issues.
