Respiratory issues
Hello doctor, I used to have some nasal congestion and felt a noticeable sensation when breathing in.
Recently, the nasal congestion has improved, but I constantly feel like my breathing is too smooth and that I'm not getting enough oxygen.
Could this be a psychological issue or related to bronchial problems? Is there any connection to my gastrointestinal issues? I've been experiencing frequent vomiting after meals and persistent burping.
I have seen an ENT specialist, but I haven't noticed any improvement (it's not gastroenteritis).

Dr. Yang Wenda reply Pulmonology
Hello: 1.
When nasal congestion is resolved, breathing feels normal and unnoticeable like in a healthy person.
2.
Frequent burping is mostly due to gastric bloating; it is recommended to consult a gastroenterologist.

Breathing issues can be complex and multifaceted, often involving a combination of physical, psychological, and environmental factors. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sensation of not getting enough air, despite your nasal congestion improving. This can be quite distressing and may lead to further anxiety, which can exacerbate the feeling of breathlessness.
Firstly, it’s important to consider the physiological aspects of your breathing. The sensation of not getting enough air can sometimes be linked to hyperventilation, where you breathe too quickly or deeply, leading to a decrease in carbon dioxide levels in the blood. This can create feelings of lightheadedness, tingling in the extremities, and a sense of breathlessness. Stress and anxiety can often trigger this response, especially in situations where you feel pressured or overwhelmed, such as during exams or significant life changes.
Additionally, you mentioned experiencing gastrointestinal issues, including frequent vomiting and belching after meals. While these symptoms may seem unrelated, there can be a connection. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause symptoms that mimic respiratory issues, as acid can irritate the throat and airways, leading to a sensation of tightness or discomfort in the chest. This can also cause a feeling of breathlessness, especially if the reflux is significant enough to affect your breathing patterns.
Furthermore, your history of nasal congestion and allergies may also play a role. Allergic rhinitis can lead to inflammation in the nasal passages, which can affect your overall breathing efficiency. While you mentioned that your nasal congestion has improved, it’s possible that residual inflammation or sensitivity could still be impacting your respiratory comfort.
In terms of psychological factors, anxiety and stress can significantly affect how we perceive our breathing. When we are anxious, we may become more aware of our breathing patterns and may misinterpret normal sensations as problematic. This heightened awareness can lead to a cycle of anxiety and breathlessness, making it difficult to relax and breathe normally.
Given your symptoms, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can conduct a thorough evaluation. This may include pulmonary function tests to assess your lung capacity and function, as well as a review of your gastrointestinal symptoms to rule out any underlying conditions such as GERD. Additionally, it may be beneficial to explore stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, yoga, or cognitive-behavioral therapy, which can help address the psychological aspects of your breathing difficulties.
In summary, your breathing issues may stem from a combination of physical and psychological factors, including potential respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal issues, and anxiety. A comprehensive approach that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of your symptoms will likely yield the best results. Remember, it’s important to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about all your symptoms, as this will help them to provide the most accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.
