After improvement of cystitis, experiencing lower back pain, general fatigue, and chills?
Hello, Dr.
Du:
Two weeks ago, I started experiencing symptoms of frequent urination (without burning sensation) and lower abdominal pain.
I consulted with a gynecologist several times, but there was no improvement.
However, after following your advice to change my lifestyle and take my medication on time, my symptoms have improved.
The frequency of urination has decreased, and I only have slight abdominal pain now, with much less frequent urination.
Yesterday afternoon, I may have aggravated my condition by being exposed to cold air, lifting heavy objects with poor posture, and it was the day before my menstrual period.
In the evening, I suddenly felt aching pain in my right lower back and abdomen, discomfort in my throat, and overall fatigue.
I felt cold easily, and when I woke up in the morning, my heart was racing, but I did not have a fever.
Today, I returned to the gynecologist to inform her of my condition.
She only said it was a cold and prescribed some additional pain relievers and antipyretics along with my original antibiotics.
After taking the medication, my cystitis symptoms have improved further, and the discomfort in my right lower back and throat has resolved.
However, I still feel cold and fatigued (with normal body temperature), and the pain in my right lower back has even radiated to my back.
Overall, this feels different from previous colds I've had.
I researched similar symptoms online and found conditions like pyelonephritis and other kidney inflammatory diseases.
Could it be possible that I have one of these, or is it just a common cold? Thank you!

Hello: Blood tests and urine tests may be necessary for diagnosis.
If there is kidney inflammation, it can cause fever.
If you have a fever, you should seek medical attention immediately.

More Info
It sounds like you have been experiencing a complex set of symptoms following your recent bout with cystitis. Your symptoms, including back pain, fatigue, cold sensitivity, and the recent onset of right-sided abdominal pain, can indeed be concerning. While it is good to hear that your urinary symptoms have improved with treatment, the persistence of other symptoms warrants further exploration.
Firstly, it is important to understand that cystitis, which is an inflammation of the bladder, can sometimes lead to complications if not fully resolved. One potential complication is pyelonephritis, which is an infection of the kidney that can occur if bacteria ascend from the bladder. Symptoms of pyelonephritis can include flank pain (which you are experiencing on the right side), fever, chills, and general malaise. The fact that you are feeling fatigued and experiencing cold sensitivity could also suggest that your body is still fighting off an infection or dealing with inflammation.
Your description of the right-sided abdominal pain and the sensation of discomfort radiating to the back could indeed indicate that the kidneys are involved. It is essential to consider that the kidneys are located in the posterior abdominal cavity, and any inflammation or infection in this area can manifest as back pain. Additionally, the cold sensitivity and fatigue you are experiencing could be related to your body's response to infection or inflammation, which can lead to systemic symptoms.
Given that your symptoms have changed and evolved, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may consider performing a urinalysis and possibly a urine culture to rule out any lingering infection. Imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan of the abdomen, could also be beneficial to assess the kidneys and surrounding structures for any signs of infection or other abnormalities.
In terms of treatment, it is good that you are already on antibiotics, as these are crucial for treating bacterial infections. If your symptoms persist or worsen, your doctor may need to adjust your treatment plan. Additionally, supportive care, such as staying well-hydrated, resting, and managing pain with over-the-counter medications, can help alleviate some of your discomfort.
It is also worth noting that stress and physical strain, such as lifting heavy objects or poor posture, can exacerbate pain and discomfort, particularly in the lower back and abdominal areas. Therefore, practicing good body mechanics and ensuring that you are not overexerting yourself during your recovery is essential.
In summary, while your urinary symptoms are improving, the presence of right-sided abdominal pain, fatigue, and cold sensitivity suggests that further evaluation is necessary to rule out any complications, such as pyelonephritis. Please consult with your healthcare provider to discuss your ongoing symptoms and determine the best course of action for your recovery. Your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing these symptoms promptly will help ensure a full recovery.
