Sudden decrease in menstrual flow?
Hello, doctor.
My menstrual cycle was originally regular and the flow was normal, but during the month I was preparing for my certification, my period changed from 5 days to 2 days, and the flow was also reduced by half.
Could this be due to excessive stress, or is it related to my change in routine? Previously, I would go to bed around 11 or 12 and wake up at 6, but now I sleep from 8 or 9 and wake up at 2 or 3.
However, this has been the case since April until now.

The sudden decrease in menstrual flow that you are experiencing can indeed be influenced by various factors, including stress and changes in your sleep patterns. Menstrual cycles can be quite sensitive to both physical and emotional stressors, as well as lifestyle changes.
Firstly, stress is a well-known factor that can affect the menstrual cycle. When you are under significant stress, your body produces higher levels of cortisol, a hormone that can interfere with the normal functioning of the hypothalamus, which regulates the menstrual cycle. This disruption can lead to changes in the timing and flow of your periods. In your case, preparing for a certification can be a significant source of stress, potentially leading to the changes you've observed in your menstrual cycle.
Secondly, changes in sleep patterns can also have a profound impact on your menstrual health. The body thrives on a consistent sleep schedule, and significant alterations can lead to hormonal imbalances. You mentioned that your sleep schedule has shifted from going to bed around 11 or 12 PM to now sleeping at 8 or 9 PM and waking up at 2 or 3 AM. This irregular sleep pattern can disrupt your circadian rhythm, which is crucial for maintaining hormonal balance. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which play vital roles in regulating your menstrual cycle, can be affected by inadequate or irregular sleep.
Additionally, other factors such as diet, exercise, and overall health can also contribute to changes in menstrual flow. If you have made any changes to your diet or physical activity levels, these could also be influencing your menstrual cycle. For instance, significant weight loss or gain, increased physical activity, or changes in nutritional intake can all lead to alterations in menstrual flow.
Given these considerations, it is advisable to monitor your menstrual cycle over the next few months. If the changes persist or if you experience other symptoms such as severe pain, significant weight changes, or any unusual discharge, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. A gynecologist can provide a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly hormonal testing, to rule out any underlying conditions that might be affecting your menstrual cycle.
In the meantime, consider implementing stress-reducing techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or regular physical activity, which can help manage stress levels. Additionally, aim to establish a more consistent sleep schedule to help regulate your body's internal clock. Good sleep hygiene practices, such as creating a calming bedtime routine and limiting screen time before bed, can also be beneficial.
In summary, both stress and changes in sleep patterns can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. By addressing these factors and consulting with a healthcare professional if necessary, you can better understand and manage the changes you are experiencing.
