Can antidepressant medications be taken together with pain relievers?
Hello Doctor: I have been taking medication for depression for six months.
Due to menstrual pain, my gynecologist prescribed Ponstan (PONSTAN KAPSEALS).
I forgot to inform the doctor that I am currently taking psychiatric medications.
I would like to know if these two types of medications can be taken together and if there are any potential side effects.
Currently, I am taking: zolpidem 10 mg, clonazepam 0.5 mg, and an antidepressant (presumably an SSRI or similar) at 50 mg.
Additionally, I would like to ask if the treatment for severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is similar to that for depression.
Thank you!

Dr. Liao Huiling reply Pharmacology
PONSTAN, used for menstrual pain, can be taken alongside your current antidepressant medication.
However, regarding your so-called "severe premenstrual syndrome," medication must be determined through a physician's diagnosis and evaluation, so I cannot answer your question at this time.

When it comes to the safe use of antidepressants alongside pain relievers, it's essential to approach this topic with caution and a clear understanding of the medications involved. In your case, you mentioned taking Zolpidem, Clonazepam, and an antidepressant (likely an SSRI or similar) while also being prescribed Ponstan (Mefenamic Acid) for menstrual pain.
First, let's address the safety of combining these medications. Generally, Ponstan is considered safe to use with most antidepressants, including SSRIs and SNRIs, as there are no significant interactions reported between these classes of drugs. However, it is crucial to monitor for any unusual side effects, as individual responses to medications can vary.
Zolpidem, a sedative primarily used for insomnia, can increase the sedative effects of Clonazepam, which is a benzodiazepine used for anxiety and panic disorders. When combined, these medications can lead to increased drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Therefore, while taking Ponstan, you should be cautious about how you feel and avoid activities that require full alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
Regarding your concern about severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and whether the treatment for this condition would be similar to that for depression, it’s important to note that PMS can sometimes be treated with antidepressants, particularly SSRIs, as they can help alleviate mood-related symptoms. However, the specific treatment plan should be tailored to your individual needs and symptoms. It’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider to discuss your PMS symptoms and explore appropriate treatment options that consider your current antidepressant regimen.
In addition to medication management, it’s essential to incorporate non-pharmacological strategies to manage both depression and PMS. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques such as mindfulness or cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) can significantly improve your overall well-being.
If you ever feel uncertain about the medications you are taking or experience any side effects, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and help ensure that your treatment plan is both safe and effective.
Lastly, remember that managing mental health and physical symptoms is a journey that often requires patience and ongoing communication with your healthcare team. You are not alone in this, and there are resources and support systems available to help you navigate through these challenges.
