Borborygmi

Hello Dr.
Chen,
1.
During this period, I have experienced varying stool consistencies, including soft stools, formed stools, and egg-drop-like stools, sometimes accompanied by a mix of egg-drop-like and ribbon-like stools.
I also have intermittent bowel sounds, especially three hours after meals.
The stools are mostly greenish with a slight yellow tint.
Could this indicate a bacterial infection?
2.
From April 26 to May 8, I noticed a medicinal smell reminiscent of Western medications on the toilet paper after bowel movements.
Could this be due to taking too many medications during this period, or could it indicate an intestinal issue?
3.
I still occasionally experience bowel sounds.
Could this be a sign of irritable bowel syndrome, or is it possibly an infection caused by Clostridium difficile?
4.
As of today, May 11, I no longer have diarrhea, and my bowel movements have returned to my usual pattern of twice a day.
However, I occasionally feel a slight dizziness near my stomach, and I still experience bowel sounds that vary in location, sometimes in the ascending colon and other times in the mid-abdomen (above the navel).
It sounds like water.
Is this normal?
I apologize for the numerous questions, and I appreciate your response.
Thank you, Dr.
Chen.

Diarrhea caused by antibiotics may be related to difficult Clostridium difficile infection.
To confirm this, relevant diagnostic tests are required.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your detailed symptoms and medical history. It sounds like you've been through quite a journey with your gastrointestinal health, and I appreciate your thoroughness in describing your experiences. Let's address your concerns one by one.

1. Soft and Varied Stool Consistency: The fluctuation between soft stools, formed stools, and even loose stools can be indicative of several conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or a mild gastrointestinal infection. Given your history of antibiotic use, it is possible that your gut flora has been disrupted, leading to changes in bowel habits. Antibiotics can sometimes lead to an imbalance in gut bacteria, which may cause symptoms like diarrhea or changes in stool consistency. The greenish-yellow color of your stools could also be related to dietary changes, bile production, or even the presence of undigested food.

2. Medication Effects: The unusual smell you noted, reminiscent of medications, could indeed be a result of the antibiotics you were taking. Antibiotics can alter the gut microbiome and lead to changes in digestion and stool odor. If you have been on multiple courses of antibiotics, it is essential to consider the impact on your gut health. Probiotics may help restore balance to your gut flora, and discussing this with your healthcare provider could be beneficial.

3. Bowel Sounds and IBS: The presence of bowel sounds, especially after meals, is generally normal as your intestines work to digest food. However, if these sounds are accompanied by discomfort or changes in bowel habits, it could suggest IBS. IBS is characterized by a combination of abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, which can include diarrhea, constipation, or both. Your symptoms of intermittent bowel sounds and discomfort could align with this diagnosis, especially given the stress and changes in your routine.

4. Ongoing Symptoms: The occasional feeling of dizziness or discomfort around your stomach area could be related to several factors, including anxiety, dietary choices, or even residual effects from your previous gastrointestinal issues. It's not uncommon for individuals recovering from gastrointestinal disturbances to experience lingering symptoms as the gut heals and adjusts.

In summary, your symptoms could be attributed to a combination of factors, including the effects of antibiotics, potential IBS, and the natural fluctuations of gut health. It is crucial to maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and consider incorporating probiotics to support your gut health. If your symptoms persist or worsen, I strongly recommend following up with a gastroenterologist for further evaluation and management. They may suggest additional tests or dietary modifications to help you feel more comfortable.

Remember, gastrointestinal health is complex, and it often requires a multifaceted approach to achieve balance and wellness. Don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider with any further questions or concerns. Take care!
