Menstrual irregularities

My period started on May 10th, but as of now, May 20th, it hasn't stopped.
During these ten days, the first three days were characterized by a small amount of brown discharge, and it wasn't until the fourth day that I experienced a normal menstrual flow, accompanied by some cramping.
By about the seventh day, the bleeding gradually lightened, and now it has returned to a small amount of brown discharge.
I visited a gynecologist today, who prescribed progesterone for me to take three times a day to help regulate my cycle.
He mentioned that the bleeding should stop by the third day of taking the medication.
However, I just took my first pill tonight, and now there is no bleeding.
Is this normal?
Additionally, around May 6th, I engaged in some genital rubbing with my boyfriend, but we did not have penetrative intercourse.
Up until now, I have not had any sexual intercourse.
Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant? The doctor mentioned a urine test today, but I declined since I have not had sexual intercourse.
Is there a chance of pregnancy? Could this be early pregnancy bleeding?

Mei Ling, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/05/21

Menstrual irregularities can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the underlying causes is essential for effective management. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing an extended menstrual period that has lasted for about ten days, with variations in flow and color. You also mentioned that you have not engaged in penetrative sexual intercourse, which is an important detail when considering the possibility of pregnancy.

Firstly, it is essential to recognize that menstrual cycles can vary significantly among individuals and can be influenced by numerous factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, lifestyle changes, and underlying medical conditions. The presence of brown discharge, especially at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, is often considered normal and can indicate older blood that has taken longer to exit the body. However, prolonged bleeding or changes in the menstrual pattern can warrant further investigation.

In your case, the fact that you have been prescribed progesterone (often referred to as "黄体素" in Chinese) suggests that your healthcare provider is addressing a potential hormonal imbalance. Progesterone is commonly used to help regulate menstrual cycles and can assist in stabilizing the endometrial lining, which may help reduce abnormal bleeding. It is not uncommon for women to experience changes in their menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations, and the use of progesterone can often lead to a resolution of these symptoms.

Regarding your concerns about pregnancy, it is important to clarify that pregnancy typically results from penetrative sexual intercourse, where sperm fertilizes an egg. While it is theoretically possible for pregnancy to occur from other forms of sexual activity (such as genital rubbing), the likelihood is significantly lower, especially if there was no direct ejaculation near the vaginal opening. Since you have not engaged in penetrative intercourse, the risk of pregnancy is minimal. However, if you have any doubts or concerns, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test or consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

As for the immediate cessation of bleeding after taking the first dose of progesterone, this can occur as the hormone begins to take effect. It is not uncommon for women to experience changes in bleeding patterns shortly after starting hormonal treatments. However, it is essential to follow your doctor's instructions and continue taking the medication as prescribed. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

In summary, menstrual irregularities can arise from various factors, and hormonal treatments like progesterone can be effective in managing these issues. Given your situation, it is advisable to monitor your symptoms closely and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. If you have any further questions or if your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to reach out for additional guidance.
