Uterine fibroids
Hello, Doctor.
I recently had a gynecological examination and found a 2 cm uterine fibroid.
Could the prolonged menstrual period of 8 to 10 days over the past year be related to the fibroid? Additionally, I experience abdominal pain (not the usual soreness) one to two days after intercourse; could this also be related to the fibroid? If so, could it cause the fibroid to grow larger or worsen? Would drinking a 500cc glass of fresh milk every day contribute to the growth of the fibroid? Thank you.
Youyou, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/05/22
Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, a 2cm uterine fibroid typically does not present any symptoms clinically.
Drinking 500cc of fresh milk daily will not cause the fibroid to grow.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas or myomas, are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. They can vary in size, number, and location within the uterus, and they are quite common. Understanding the symptoms, concerns, and myths surrounding uterine fibroids is essential for managing health effectively.
Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids
The symptoms of uterine fibroids can vary widely among individuals. Some common symptoms include:
1. Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Many women with fibroids experience heavy periods (menorrhagia) that can last longer than usual, sometimes extending to 8-10 days, as you mentioned. This is often due to the fibroids causing an increase in the surface area of the uterine lining, leading to more bleeding.
2. Pelvic Pain or Pressure: Fibroids can cause discomfort or pain in the pelvic area. This pain can be exacerbated during sexual intercourse, as you described, and may feel different from typical muscle soreness. This discomfort can be attributed to the fibroid's size or location, which may put pressure on surrounding organs.
3. Frequent Urination or Difficulty Emptying the Bladder: Depending on their size and location, fibroids can press against the bladder, leading to increased urinary frequency or urgency.
4. Constipation: Large fibroids can also press against the rectum, causing constipation.
5. Backache or Leg Pain: In some cases, fibroids can cause pain that radiates to the lower back or legs.
Concerns Regarding Fibroids
Regarding your specific concerns:
- Extended Menstrual Duration: Yes, the prolonged menstrual periods you are experiencing could be related to the presence of a fibroid. Fibroids can disrupt normal uterine function, leading to heavier and longer menstrual cycles.
- Pain After Intercourse: The abdominal pain you feel after sexual activity could also be associated with the fibroid. If the fibroid is located in a position that causes it to be compressed during intercourse, it can lead to discomfort or pain.
- Growth of Fibroids: While having a fibroid does not necessarily mean it will grow larger due to other factors like sexual activity or diet, it is essential to monitor any changes. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen, can influence the growth of fibroids. Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help track any changes in size.
Myths About Fibroids
There are several myths regarding uterine fibroids that need clarification:
- Diet and Fibroid Growth: Drinking milk or consuming dairy products does not directly cause fibroids to grow. However, some studies suggest that a diet high in red meat and low in fruits and vegetables may be associated with an increased risk of fibroid development. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is generally recommended for overall health.
- Fertility Issues: While fibroids can affect fertility, many women with fibroids can conceive and have healthy pregnancies. The impact of fibroids on fertility often depends on their size and location.
- Cancer Risk: Uterine fibroids are benign and do not increase the risk of uterine cancer. However, any new growths or changes in existing fibroids should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms of prolonged menstruation and abdominal pain after intercourse could indeed be related to the presence of a uterine fibroid. It is crucial to maintain regular follow-ups with your gynecologist to monitor the fibroid's size and any changes in your symptoms. If you experience significant pain, changes in bleeding patterns, or any other concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Understanding your condition and addressing any myths can empower you to make informed decisions about your health.
