Feeling of a foreign body in the throat?
Hello Doctor, I've been experiencing discomfort in my nose for the past month, accompanied by discomfort in my ears and head.
I have visited clinics and hospitals, and I underwent a nasal endoscopy at the hospital.
The doctors all said it was a cold, but the issues keep arising.
Now I even have a sensation of a foreign body in my throat, and I've noticed some blood in my phlegm when coughing.
I would like to ask if a nasal endoscopy also allows the doctor to see the throat? I'm very worried that the doctor might have overlooked issues in my throat while performing the nasal endoscopy.
I'm concerned that there might be problems with my esophagus or throat.
P.S.
The sensation of a foreign body is located just below the Adam's apple.

Dr. Li Jiaxuan reply Otolaryngology
If symptoms do not improve, it is recommended to return to the otolaryngology clinic for a follow-up.
A nasal endoscopy can visualize one side of the larynx near the oral cavity, but for the sensation of a foreign body below the Adam's apple, a consultation with a gastroenterologist may be necessary.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
The sensation of a foreign body in the throat, often described as a feeling of something stuck or an irritation, can be quite distressing. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing discomfort in your nose, ears, and now your throat, accompanied by a cough that produces blood-streaked phlegm. This combination of symptoms warrants careful consideration and evaluation.
Firstly, it's important to understand that the throat and nasal passages are interconnected. When you have nasal congestion or irritation, it can lead to post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, causing irritation and the sensation of a foreign body. This can also lead to coughing and throat discomfort. The presence of blood in your phlegm is particularly concerning and should not be overlooked, as it can indicate a range of issues from minor irritation to more serious conditions.
Regarding your concern about the nasal endoscopy, it is true that this procedure primarily focuses on the nasal passages and the lower part of the sinuses. While some practitioners may have the ability to visualize the lower throat (hypopharynx) during this procedure, it is not the primary focus. If your doctor did not specifically examine your throat during the endoscopy, it is possible that any issues in that area could have been missed.
Given your symptoms, here are some potential causes for the sensation of a foreign body in the throat:
1. Post-Nasal Drip: As mentioned, mucus accumulation can lead to irritation in the throat, causing discomfort and the sensation of something being stuck.
2. Pharyngitis or Laryngitis: Inflammation of the throat (pharynx) or voice box (larynx) can cause discomfort and a sensation of fullness or foreign body sensation.
3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Acid reflux can irritate the throat and esophagus, leading to a sensation of a lump or foreign body.
4. Allergic Reactions: Allergies can cause swelling and irritation in the throat, leading to discomfort.
5. Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to inflammation and irritation in the throat, which may also cause bleeding if the tissues are severely irritated.
6. Structural Issues: In rare cases, structural abnormalities or growths in the throat or esophagus can cause these sensations.
Given the presence of blood in your phlegm, it is crucial to seek further evaluation. Here are some steps you should consider:
- Follow-Up with an ENT Specialist: An Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist can perform a thorough examination of your throat and esophagus, potentially using a flexible endoscope to visualize areas that may not have been assessed during your initial visit.
- Consider Imaging Studies: If necessary, imaging studies such as a CT scan may be recommended to evaluate for any underlying issues in the sinuses, throat, or chest.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including any changes in the sensation of the foreign body, the presence of blood, and any other new symptoms that may arise.
- Hydration and Humidification: Staying well-hydrated and using a humidifier can help soothe throat irritation.
- Avoid Irritants: Try to avoid smoking, strong odors, and allergens that may exacerbate your symptoms.
In conclusion, while the sensation of a foreign body in the throat can often be attributed to benign causes, the presence of blood in your phlegm is a red flag that should be addressed promptly. Seeking further evaluation from an ENT specialist will help ensure that any potential issues are identified and treated appropriately. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so do not hesitate to advocate for yourself in seeking the care you need.
