After circumcision, there may be yellow discharge from the glans?
Hello, doctor! After undergoing circumcision surgery on the evening of May 26, I have noticed that my glans frequently secretes a yellowish fluid.
It also feels itchy and prickly when it rubs against my pants.
Is this normal? Should I just dry the yellow fluid and disinfect it with Betadine?

Hello: If there is yellow fluid on the non-wounded area (skin), just keep it clean.
However, if yellow fluid is coming from the urethra, you should seek medical attention for an examination.
Friction of the glans against clothing can also cause itching and a prickling sensation—this is because there was previously protection from the foreskin, and now that it has been removed, there may be a period of discomfort.

After undergoing a circumcision, it is not uncommon to experience some discharge from the glans (the head of the penis). The presence of yellow discharge can be concerning, but it is essential to understand the context and the healing process involved.
Firstly, it is important to note that after any surgical procedure, including circumcision, the body goes through a healing phase. During this time, it is normal for the surgical site to produce some discharge, which may appear yellowish. This discharge can be a combination of serum (the clear fluid that seeps from wounds), old blood, and remnants of any ointments or dressings used during the healing process. In many cases, this yellowish fluid is not indicative of an infection, especially if there are no accompanying symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or a foul odor.
However, the sensation of itching or a prickling feeling when the glans rubs against clothing is also common. This discomfort can be attributed to several factors, including the sensitivity of the healing tissue, the presence of sutures (if any), and the natural healing process. As the area heals, it may become more sensitive, leading to these sensations.
Regarding the management of the yellow discharge, it is generally advisable to keep the area clean and dry. Using a mild antiseptic solution like Betadine (povidone-iodine) can be appropriate, but it should be done carefully. Overuse of antiseptics can sometimes irritate the skin, so it is best to follow your doctor's recommendations on how to clean the area. If the discharge continues or worsens, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or a foul smell), it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider.
In summary, while some yellow discharge after circumcision can be normal, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you experience persistent symptoms or any signs of infection, seek medical advice promptly. Healing takes time, and proper care is vital to ensure a smooth recovery. Always follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions for the best outcomes.
