Skin allergy medications and contraceptive pills?
Hello, I have a skin allergy and my doctor prescribed Fynadin 60mg and Donison 5mg for oral use.
I would like to know if there will be any interactions with my birth control pill, Yaz.
Please take some time to confirm this for me, as my dermatologist said he is not sure.

Dr. Chen Yuemei reply Pharmacology
Hello: After checking the database, it has been found that the medication you are taking, Donison (active ingredient: Prednisolone, a corticosteroid), interacts with YAZ (active ingredients: drospirenone/ethinylestradiol).
The combination may increase the risk of corticosteroid side effects.
However, if taken for a short duration, it is unlikely to cause significant corticosteroid side effects, so there is no need for concern.
It will also not affect the efficacy of the contraceptive pill.

When considering the interaction between allergy medications and birth control pills, it is essential to understand how these medications work and their potential effects on hormonal contraceptives. The two medications you mentioned, Fynadin (which contains bilastine) and Donison (which contains desloratadine), are both antihistamines commonly used to treat allergic reactions, including skin allergies.
Antihistamines like Fynadin and Donison primarily work by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. They do not typically affect the metabolism of hormones in the body, which is the primary concern when considering interactions with birth control pills. Most studies and clinical data suggest that standard antihistamines do not interfere with the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, including birth control pills.
However, it is essential to note that some medications can affect the liver enzymes responsible for metabolizing hormones. For example, certain antibiotics and anticonvulsants can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills by increasing the metabolism of the hormones in the contraceptives. Fortunately, neither Fynadin nor Donison is known to have such effects.
That said, individual responses to medications can vary, and there may be other factors to consider, such as the presence of other medications you may be taking, your overall health, and any specific medical conditions. If you are taking other medications or have concerns about your health, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider or a pharmacist for personalized advice.
In summary, based on current knowledge, Fynadin and Donison should not interact with your birth control pill, Yejih, and should not compromise its effectiveness. However, it is always prudent to monitor your body’s response to any new medication and report any unusual side effects to your healthcare provider. If you have any lingering concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor for further clarification and peace of mind.
Additionally, if you are planning to become pregnant or are concerned about the implications of using these medications while on birth control, discussing your plans with your healthcare provider is crucial. They can provide guidance on the best practices for managing allergies while considering your reproductive health. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare team to ensure the best outcomes for your health and any future family planning.
