Inferior turbinate hypertrophy

A few days ago, I underwent surgery on my inferior turbinate due to the severity of my condition, as recommended by the doctor.
As a result, my ear fullness and tinnitus have completely disappeared.
What could have caused this?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: Chronic rhinitis may lead to dysfunction of the Eustachian tube, so surgery may result in improvement.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

After undergoing turbinate surgery, it's not uncommon for patients to experience symptoms such as ear congestion and tinnitus. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors related to the anatomy of the nasal and ear structures, as well as the surgical procedure itself.

The nasal cavity and the middle ear are interconnected through the Eustachian tube, which helps to equalize pressure in the ear. When you have nasal obstruction, such as from enlarged turbinates, it can lead to Eustachian tube dysfunction. This dysfunction can cause a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ears, as well as tinnitus, which is often described as ringing or buzzing in the ears. The surgery to reduce the size of the turbinates can alleviate this obstruction, allowing for better airflow and drainage, which may explain why your ear congestion and tinnitus have resolved post-surgery.

Additionally, during turbinate surgery, there may be some manipulation of the surrounding tissues, which can temporarily affect the Eustachian tube's function or the pressure balance in the ear. Post-operative swelling or inflammation can also contribute to these sensations. However, as the healing process progresses and the inflammation subsides, normal function typically returns, leading to the resolution of symptoms.

It's also worth noting that the sensation of ear fullness can sometimes be a result of changes in the pressure dynamics within the ear following surgery. As the nasal passages open up and airflow improves, the pressure in the middle ear can normalize, which may alleviate the feeling of congestion.

In summary, the resolution of ear congestion and tinnitus after turbinate surgery is likely due to the improved airflow and drainage in the nasal passages, which positively affects Eustachian tube function. If you continue to experience any discomfort or if symptoms return, it's advisable to follow up with your ENT specialist for further evaluation. They can assess whether there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed, such as residual swelling or other complications related to the surgery.

In the context of post-operative care, it's essential to monitor your symptoms and communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional treatments or therapies if necessary, such as nasal saline irrigation or decongestants, to support your recovery and ensure optimal healing. Always prioritize your health and well-being by seeking professional advice when needed.
